Early Review: The Turn by Kim Harrison
The Hollows #0.1

Can science save us when all else fails?

Trisk and her hated rival, Kalamack, have the same goal: save their species from extinction.
Death comes in the guise of hope when a genetically modified tomato created to feed the world combines with the government's new tactical virus, giving it an unexpected host and a mode of transport. Plague takes the world, giving the paranormal species an uncomfortable choice to stay hidden and allow humanity to die, or to show themselves in a bid to save them.

Under accusations of scientific misconduct, Trisk and Kal flee across a plague torn United States to convince leaders of the major paranormal species to save their supposedly weaker kin, but not everyone thinks humanity should be saved.

Kal surreptitiously works against her as Trisk fights the prejudices of two societies to prove that not only does humanity have something to offer, but that long-accepted beliefs against women, dark magic, and humanity itself can turn to understanding; that when people are at their worst that the best show their true strength, and that love can hold the world together as a new balance is found.

Oh. My. Goodness. THE TURN was so incredibly good, I'm going to have a very hard time writing this review without overly gushing like an utter fan girl. This book is everything I've been missing without my latest hollows fix. I have to admit I wasn't sure a prequel could live up to the epicness of Rachel, Ivy, Jenks, and Trent, but oh it does. Trisk is fierce and incredibly determined, but an outcast setting her up to be the obvious favorite, and Kal is a privileged slimeball to say the least making me loathe him at times. However, what made this a truly standout read is that neither character fits fully into those good/bad labels. There's just so much more to either of them, but I won't spoil things, just suffice it to say there's MUCH more than first meets the eye with both of them.

Now onto the plot, which while I knew what the outcome of THE TURN would be, the journey was a pleasant surprise every step of the way. I really enjoyed seeing how everything unfolded and honestly now I want to go back and re-read the entire series to see if some of the details in this book were hinted at in the original books. It definitely won't be a hardship. :)

I have searched everywhere to see if this prequel is a standalone, or the start of a new early Hollow series, but I can't find any info. I truly hope it's the latter because this book was utterly fantastic and I want so much more. Simply put, THE TURN was everything I had hoped for, just an utter treat. Fans of the Hollows should have this on their auto buy list pronto!

Review: The Operator by Kim Harrison

The Operator by Kim Harrison
Peri Reed Chronicles #2

On-the-run ex-agent Peri Reed returns bigger and bolder than ever in this second highly-anticipated installment in #1 New York Times bestselling author Kim Harrison's new suspense trilogy, The Peri Reed Chronicles.

Peri Reed’s job eats her mind, but for a special task agent in hiding, forgetting the past can be a blessing.

Betrayed by the man she thought she loved and the agency who turned her into the very thing she fought against, Peri abandoned the wealth and privilege of Opti for anonymity riddled with memory gaps and self-doubt. But when a highly addictive drug promises to end her dependency on those who’d use her as a tool for their own success, she must choose to remain broken and vulnerable, or return to the above-the-law power and prestige she once left: strong but without will—for whoever holds her next fix, will hold her loyalty.

Yet even now as then, a love based on lies of omission might still save her life.

I was really impressed at how easily I slipped back into this world once starting THE OPERATOR. Many times, especially in a series that only has one book so far, and particularly when that first book was read a long time ago, I'll feel lost for good bit while starting the new book. And as I said, that wasn't the case here. There's something just so enjoyable about slipping back into this series and these characters. So kudos to Ms. Harrison.

Peri seemed much more settled this time around. Sure she's on the run, and so much happens in this book it's almost frenetic at times, but Peri seemed to have a much better sense of herself and who she is. Sure there's still a long road ahead and questions to be answered but I felt much more at ease with her this time, allowing me to better enjoy her character and further immerse myself into the story surrounding her. I especially enjoyed the glimpses into her past, the things she's forgotten and the dynamic between her and Silas. There's such a history there, but we're only scratching the surface as of yet, and I can't wait to see how things further develop between the two.

Speaking of scratching the surface, I feel like we're only just starting to see Peri's real skills, and the full depth of the world. Every time I think I have all the rules down and know exactly who the characters are, one of them throws a twist in the game and changes my perspectives. It definitely kept me on my toes!

All in all, THE OPERATOR was a very enjoyable read full of twists and turns that I thoroughly enjoyed. Fans of scifi/paranormal thrillers won't want to miss this fantastic series!

Early Review: Waylaid by Kim Harrison

Waylaid by Kim Harrison

Worlds collide when Rachel Morgan of The Hollows meets Peri Reed of The Drafter in this exciting new short story from #1 New York Times bestselling author Kim Harrison.

The paranormal and the futuristic meet in this thrilling novella featuring your favorite badass heroines from two of “the amazingly gifted” (RT Book Reviews) Kim Harrison’s most beloved series: the Hollows and the Peri Reed Chronicles. The magic of the Hollows runs full force into the technological sophistication of The Drafter when a device capable of carrying a city’s data stream pulls Rachel, the bounty hunter witch of the Hollows, between realities, marooning her in a world where the supernatural holds no sway. To get Rachel and Jenks home, Peri, the dangerous renegade of 2030, must decide what will chart her future: her blind trust in those who grant her power, or her intuition telling her to believe.

WAYLAID is a fun romp of a mashup between one of my all time favorite series, The Hollows, and the author's new series, Peri Reed. When I heard about this novelette, I had wondered how Kim Harrison would realistically mash the two very very different worlds without it stretching the rules to far. I was pleasantly surprised at how smoothly everything played out. Rachel true to her character comes blazing in and her rashness gets her into trouble like normal. Peri on the other hand, is much more controlled and by the books type, and yet in this story a bit of Rachel rubbed off on her. It made for a fun but short tale.

One thing to note is that I think the draw for WAYLAID is more of a hook rather than a true story in it's own right. It feels like more of a marketing tool (and a good one!) for Hollows fans to be enticed by another story with Rachel, and introduce them to Peri's world. As a die hard Hollows fan, I think it's worth the $0.99 price tag, but for someone else who hasn't read the books, it may not be. Then again the reverse could be true and bring Peri fans over to the Hollows. Either way, it's a fun story that I enjoyed a great deal, that only made me love both series even more. Perhaps a re-read of the hollows is in order during the long wait until the next Peri book...

The Drafter by Kim Harrison
The Peri Reed Chronicles #1

Detroit 2030. Double-crossed by the person she loved and betrayed by the covert government organization that trained her to use her body as a weapon, Peri Reed is a renegade on the run.

Don’t forgive and never forget has always been Peri’s creed. But her day job makes it difficult: she is a drafter, possessed of a rare, invaluable skill for altering time, yet destined to forget both the history she changed and the history she rewrote.

When Peri discovers her name on a list of corrupt operatives, she realizes that her own life has been manipulated by the agency. She joins forces with a mysterious rogue soldier in a deadly race to piece together the truth about her final task, unable to trust even herself.

Talk about some twists and turns! THE DRAFTER is a great mix of scifi and thriller, and with each chapter a new depth and twist to the story was unveiled. Every time I thought I had things figured out, the rug was pulled out from under me. It made for an incredibly intense read that bordered on stressful to be honest. If I only had one word to describe this book, nail-biter would be the one that comes to mind. Once things took off I couldn't put it down. Frankly, I was a nervous wreck while reading the last half of this book, but in the best sort of way. I couldn't have put it down if I tried.

One thing I do wish is that I had read the prequel novella. It seems like it's more of a integral read to the series than I originally thought. I have to admit that the beginning of this book was a bit slow for me as I felt like I was scrambling to keep up and figure out what was going on. But after reading the description and the reviews for Sideswiped I think a lot of my early confusion wouldn't have happened. THE DRAFTER has a lot of world building, which is to be expected in a new series, especially a futuristic scifi thriller like this one. However when you add that heavy world building with the very secretive side of the thriller parts of the story, it just kept me from really sinking into the book quite as much as I had wanted to. Of course, things do pick up almost to a frenetic pace once more things are revealed, I just wish I had the prequel's knowledge to have balanced out the pacing overall.

All in all, THE DRAFTER is one heck of a nail-biting intense ride of a book. World building pacing and confusion aside that should be alleviated by reading the prequel, this is an utterly fantastic read that is sure to please fans of an intense read.

The Witch With No Name by Kim Harrison
The Hollows # 13

At long last... The final book in the New York Timesbestselling Hollows series by Kim Harrison!

Rachel Morgan's come a long way from the clutzy runner of Dead Witch Walking. She's faced vampires and werewolves, banshees, witches, and soul-eating demons. She's crossed worlds, channeled gods, and accepted her place as a day-walking demon. She's lost friends and lovers and family, and an old enemy has become something much more.

But power demands responsibility, and world-changers must always pay a price. That time is now.

To save Ivy's soul and the rest of the living vampires, to keep the demonic ever after and our own world from destruction, Rachel Morgan will risk everything.

The blurb says it all "At long last... The final book." It's both so satisfying and yet utterly bittersweet to see this much loved and long running story come to an end. I have to admit that I was more than a little nervous to start this book as there has been so much build up and my expectations were so high. This series, probably more than any I've read, really need to go out with a bang to give true justice to the investment and attachment to these characters. I'm happy to say that THE WITCH WITH NO NAME doesn't go out with a bang. No, it goes out with a whole herd of fireworks and explosion bangs to light up the entire sky on the Fourth of July.

It truly is amazing to see so many long running threads come together and work themselves out. The last couple of books have started pulling things together, but this final book was the final seal in everything, and I simply loved it. Never could I have predicted things to end up the way they have looking back to when I first read Dead Witch Walking. The character growth and change that the entire cast of characters have gone through is simply astounding. But of course Rachel most of all has stolen my heart with her changes. Who would have though that that reckless witch would have turned into the catalyst to changing all the different Inderlander groups for the better.

THE WITCH WITH NO NAME proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that Kim Harrison is an absolute master at her craft. I simply cannot express how much I have enjoyed this book and the series as a whole. These books will be on my re-read shelf for many many years to come. My hat goes off to you Ms. Harrison. Bravo!

The Undead Pool by Kim Harrison
The Hollows #12

Witch and day-walking demon Rachel Morgan has managed to save the demonic ever after from shrinking, but at a high cost. Now strange magic is attacking Cincinnati and the Hollows, causing spells to backfire or go horribly wrong, and the truce between the races, between Inderlander and human, is shattering.

Rachel must stop the occurrences before the undead vampire masters who keep the rest of the undead under control are lost and it becomes all-out supernatural war. However, the only way to do so is through the ancient elven wild magic, which carries its own perils.

Sometimes when it comes to this series and writing reviews, I feel a bit like a broken record as how many different ways can you express absolutely loving a book? But here I am again writing a review about a book in this series that I loved and could quite honestly turn right around and read again. Seriously it was that good. Not only is there an incredible amount of character growth, and considering the size of the cast, that's more than impressive, but there's also one heck of a main plot and side ones as well to boot. In fact, this is a game changer book, a rather major one in fact. Considering there's only one more installment left in this series, I'm almost baffled at the turn of events. Do I love the new directions? Absolutely, and a lot of them I have to admit I was hoping for, but there were many twists that I didn't see coming at all, which only made the read even better, and rather impressive to still be able to surprise me 12 books in. But that being said, the shake up will make things more than interesting, and probably rather jammed pack in the final installment as there's going to be a lot to resolve. But then again, I wouldn't expect anything less than a stellar bang from this series. Now, only to wait the year plus till it releases...

Now I realize that I've been very very vague in this review, but honestly there isn't much to talk about without spoiling, and trust me, you won't want anything spoiled. Thi especially when it comes to the many different character dynamics that you are dying to know about. (*Coughs* Rachel & Trent). So while I apologize that I haven't given away any juicy details, you'll thank me when you get your hands on the book and get to read it completely fresh and untainted.

So to sum things up, THE UNDEAD POOL is a must read, and Kim Harrison should be on any Urban Fantasy fan's auto buy list. If you haven't read this series, well then you don't know what you are missing, and if you have, prepare to be amazed yet again at Harrison's skills in crafting a captivatingly excellent story. Bravo Ms. Harrison. Bravo.

Early Review: Ever After by Kim Harrison

Ever After by Kim Harrison
The Hollows #11

The ever after, the demonic realm that parallels the human world, is shrinking. If it disappears completely, so does all magic. It's up to witch-turned-daywalking-demon Rachel Morgan to avert catastrophe and keep life from changing... for the worse.
While saving the world is important, it isn't Rachel's only motivation. There's also the small fact that she caused the ley line to rip in the first place, setting off a chain reaction of unfortunate events. That little mistake has made her life forfeit unless she can fix it. It's also made her more than a few enemies, including the most powerful demon in the ever after—a terrifying entity who eats souls and now has an insatiable appetite for her. He's already kidnapped her friend and goddaughter to lure her out, and if Rachel doesn't give herself up soon, they'll die.
But Rachel has more than a few impressive and frightening skills of her own, and she isn't going to hand over her soul and her life without one hell of a fight. She's also got a surprise: elven tycoon Trent Kalamack. With this unlikely ally beside her—a prospect both thrilling and unnerving—she's going to return to the ever after, kick some demon butt, rescue her loved ones... and prevent an apocalypse before it's too late. Or, at least that's the plan...

The ever after is shrinking, and Rachel's ley line is at the center of the problem. Her life is on the line if she can't repair it within the strict deadline. Problem is she doesn't know how to fix the line and with the clock ticking she's under a whole lot of pressure. Even worse, Ku Sox is back causing chaos and Rachel is the only one who has the guts to stand up to him, at least on the demonic side that is. Her friends are more than willing to stand beside her, but they just don't have the means to fight Ku Sox and survive. The only one who stands a chance is Trent and that will require Rachel to trust him more than she may be able to. With an entire world at stake can Rachel put the past aside and put her very fate and freedom in his hands?

When I think back to who Rachel used to be, I am absolutely astounded at the sheer amount of growth she has gone through in this series. Granted, that growth has been steadily building over the course of the series. In fact in my review of A PERFECT BLOOD I talked about no matter how much growth Rachel achieves, whenever danger comes around she always goes off "off half-cocked like an avenging angel." However, what really shocked me about EVER AFTER was that seemed to be shifting as Rachel is actually taking the time to take a step back to consider all of her options before acting, even while in danger. In fact there was one point in the book where they had to do a rushed job, and Rachel was literally beside herself because they didn't have time to fully plan things out. And to think, Ivy's planning used to drive her batty! Also, Rachel's perception of the world seems to be starting to show shades of gray as she realizes that everything cannot simply be categorized as good or evil. In fact, her shining purity takes a major test towards the end of the book, and if it hadn't of been a rather unlikely person asking her to not compromise her morals, she probably would have. Of course the object of her anger did deserve the punishment she wanted to give and then some, but it wouldn't have been worth compromising herself, and I'm so glad the person stepped in to stop her. As much as I enjoy seeing her grow and mature, I don't want her ever to lose the shinning goodness that drew me to her in the first place.

I've always loved this series, but PALE DEMON seemed to be the major turning point where the series went from being very good to absolutely astounding. So much so, that I was rather surprised when A PERFECT BLOOD wound up being even better since I just didn't see how anything could top that road trip. Now, I'm only even more amazed since EVER AFTER topped them both. I'm just in sheer awe at Kim Harrison's ability to craft such an enriching story and cast of characters.  That being said, I also have an almost love hate relationship going on with her books as she never pulls her punches and the raw depths of emotions leave me reeling.

While it is always very exciting to get an early review copy of a book, there are a few downsides. One being that my wait between books is even longer which is rather rough considering just how desperate I am to get my hands on the next installment. The second and biggest downside is that whenever the book is really good or there are shocking events, I have no one to discuss it with. In EVER AFTER there were several major shakeups that have left me reeling even several days later. And that ending, pure torture. But as far as this review goes, to avoid spoilers, suffice it to say that EVER AFTER will keep you on the very edge of your seat with its heart pounding action, bitter heartbreak, and staggering emotions. Simply put, The Hollows series is one of the absolutely top best Urban Fantasies out there, and you don't want to miss it!

Into the Woods by Kim Harrison
Tales from the Hollows and Beyond

Fans have fallen for bounty hunter and witch Rachel Morgan. Through banishment and road trips, deadly supernatural duels and lost loves, they have avidly cheered her on, eagerly awaiting the next installment in her adventures. This collection of short works, published together in once volume for the first time, adds a whole new dimension to the Hollows saga, featuring tales involving Rachel and her coterie of friends and enemies. Untitled contains original works, including:

"Million Dollar Baby"-original novella about what happens when elven tycoon Trent Kalamack and Jenks the pixy team up to rescue Trent's daughter;

"Spider Web" and "Grace's Fall"-original novelettes set in brand-new fantasy worlds;

Here, too, are reprinted short stories, including:

"Undead in The Garden of Good and Evil"-an Ivy novella from Dates from Hell

"Dirty Magic"-a Mia the banshee short story from Hotter Than Hell

"The Bridges of Eden Park"-a Kisten/Rachel short from the mass market edition of For a Few Demons More

"Two Ghosts for Sister Rachel"-a Robbie/Rachel/Pierce novella from Holidays from Hell

"The Bespelled"-a Ceri/Al short story from the mass market edition of The Outlaw Demon Wails

"Ley Line Drifter"-a Bis/Jenks novella from Unbound

Introduction:
When I saw that there would be a novella collection by Kim Harrison, I was incredibly excited. Even though I knew that I would have already read many of the ones included due to my obsession with reading everything from the Hollows world. It would just be awesome to have all that yummy goodness in one place. Of course I will admit that it was the new stuff that excited me the most, but I still would have purchased it without it. Yes, I'm that big of a fan. Onto the stories...

The Hollows:

The Bespelled: While I had previously read this novella it was nice to read it again. It does show a much more abusive Al than the one he has grown to be since being influenced by Rachel for so long. I really love that demon, even if he was rather horrible to Ceri, but then again she really doesn't have anyone to blame but herself as this novella showed her choices.

Two Ghosts for Sister Rachel: This was another previously published novella, but one I hadn't read prior to this collection. It was really interesting to see how very different Rachel was back when she was still weak from her childhood. I feel like after reading this that I understand why she is the way she is and her choices so much better. It was in this novella that she learned taking risks is really the only thing that makes her feel truly alive. Also, even though I'm not the biggest Pierce fan, it was fun to see their initial introduction.

Undead in the Garden of Good and Evil: Another novella that I had read before, this one shows Ivy in the past right before she met Rachel. I'll admit that I wasn't thrilled about the Kisten and her parts as in my mind he always belonged to Rachel. That being said, this novella gave a really good picture of the mental abuse that both Ivy and Kisten endured over the years. The manipulation is absolutely horrifying, but this novella seemed to show the turning point for Ivy as she finally started to want something more for herself.

Dirty Magic: This one was a new one for me, and while it was enjoyable for the closer look into Mia, I can't say it was my favorite of the Hollows novellas. I'm just not the biggest fan of Mia, so seeing her use someone so cruelly only turned me off even more.

The Bridges of Eden Park: I had read this one before, and it still makes me so sad even now. I just miss Kisten so much. His death really stunk, and while I am far enough past it that I can understand Kim Harrison's reasoning that he needed to go, it still is hard. That being said, this is a very enjoyable little outtake between them with both action and sentimentality. Man I miss that guy!

Key Line Drifter: Again, another I had read previously. This novella shows Jenks with his first solo/personal job. I felt like it really accentuated just how unusual he is compared to other pixies. Of course those differences are what make him completely awesome. It also was fun to see him team up with Bis and the trouble they get in to.

Million Dollar Baby: If nothing else, this collection is absolutely worth reading just for this novella alone. I am a huge Trent fan, in fact he is the only male character I have even come close to accepting since Kisten's death. It was really enjoyable to get a better look into his head. I found it interesting to see just how much Rachel's opinion of him matters. He always seems so closed off, it was amazing to realize how much turmoil is going on beneath the surface. Trent really hates the things he has had to do to protect his race, and wants to do anything he can to stop the deaths that seem to surround him like a heavy shroud. I also loved seeing him meet his daughter for the first time, definitely heart wrenching!

Beyond the Hollows:

Pet Shop Boys: I absolutely loved this novella. There was just something so yummy about the characters having the characteristics of both vampires and the fey. Seriously, anyone who is tired of vampires due to the heavy market saturation, will absolutely love the premise behind these guys. I really hope something more becomes of this story because I think that would be a truly awesome series to read!

Temson Estates: This story was my least favorite of the bunch. It just didn't really spark my interest or attention. The story is about dryads, only in a scientific way, and that's probably where my interest was lacking. I just prefer magic to science in my books.

Spider Silk: I loved this story. It was so creepy and mysterious, definitely another one with full series potential. That being said, I felt like it ended rather abruptly, with things left too open-ended for my tastes. But then again, those unanswered questions do leave things more open for more stories, so I guess I shouldn't complain.

Grace: This story was awesome, and the premise behind it leads to so many possibilities. I think this is the series Kim is considering on diving into next, so I have to say that I'm really happy about that. Grace seems like such an amazing character, but she also is a spitfire like Rachel, which will keep things more than interesting. However, unlike Rachel, she easily sees her own flaws and instantly takes steps to correct them. It made her rather admirable.

Conclusion:
I may be biased, but I think Into the Woods is an absolute must buy for fans of The Hollows, as it gives deeper looks that we don't get to see in the main series. It also was really great to see some of her work outside of The Hollows, since it is winding down and will be soon time to move on. After reading these novellas, I have even more confidence and excitement for what is in store next.

A Perfect Blood

A Perfect Blood by Kim Harrison
The Hollows #10

Ritually murdered corpses are appearing across Cincinnati, terrifying amalgams of human and other. Pulled in to help investigate by the FIB, former witch turned day-walking demon Rachel Morgan soon realizes a horrifying truth--a would-be creator is determined to make his (or her) own demons. But it can't be done without Rachel's blood, in this latest blockbuster by a "New York Times"-bestselling author.

Despite her limitations from being cut off from most her magic, Rachel is still out in the thick of things with her runner service. However, her latest case hits a lot closer to home when she realizes that the brutally murdered corpses point to someone trying to create their own day-walking demons, and her blood may be the key. And to think, she once thought things couldn't get worse than being shunned by the coven.  Now, she'll have to get to the bottom of things fast before she finds herself in the middle of her worst nightmare.

At the beginning of A Perfect Blood, Rachel is in what can be best described as a period of stagnation.  Prior to this she was living her life at warp speed, but everything came to a screeching halt when cut herself off from the lines and all of her potential via her elven bracelet compliments of Trent. However, her fear and hiding doesn't really seem to hit home until she realizes that Ivy and Jenks are moving on without her. This realization leads to some pretty hard decisions on her part as well as a good deal of growing up. Still, Rachel wouldn't be who she is without her extreme need to be in the middle of things regardless of the risk or idiocy of her choices. She is such a flawed character, but I love her so very much. It always brings a smile to my face to watch her grow and mature and try to make better decisions, but whenever danger comes about she will always run off half-cocked like an avenging angel. Her friends mean so very much to her, and yet there is still that small part of her that cannot seem to let go and for once let someone else take charge. In fact her friends know her so well that they just plan on her doing something crazy, and are just ready to pick up the pieces in the end, and I couldn't help the smile that came to my face each time.

Putting all of Rachel's other flaws aside, her biggest issue is trust. It just doesn't come easy to her, especially when it comes to Trent. However, in A Perfect Blood, we got to see a shifting in the dynamic between the two of them. It can't be described better than a dance with both of them circling each other, and testing the waters to slowly start to come together. As far as what their actual relationship is, well I'm not entirely sure, and to be honest neither of them seem to have much of clue either. They aren't lovers, or even really friends, but they aren't really adversaries at this point either. For now I think I will just say that they seem to have a mutual respect for one another with a tentative trust. Prior to reading A Perfect Blood, I was gung-ho on my hopes of them becoming a couple like yesterday. However, what occurred in this book was so much more natural, that it felt right. If something more grows from it in the future, I surely won't complain, but for now I am quite content.

Whenever anyone asks for a recommendation in the Urban Fantasy genre, The Hollows series is always the first thing I spout out. It is a true testament to the awesomeness of this series that even after ten books, I am still as in love with the characters and their journey as I was the very first time I read Dead Witch Walking. Each installment has been better than the last, and A Perfect Blood is no exception. I may seem like a bit of a fan girl at this point, but trust me, these books warrant the attention. A Perfect Blood truly was a ride from start to finish and my hat goes off to you Ms. Harrison!

Kim Harrison Signing & Giveaway

, by KT

On the 24th, my mom and I made the trek down to see Kim Harrison at her MD tour stop. I cannot tell you how excited I was for this event. I've been waiting for what seems like forever for her to finally come anywhere close to my area. Seriously, there was a whole lot of Squeeing involved. So while we were waiting in line, the Bunny cam got passed along, and of course my mom and I had to do the Kiss Kiss. ;) Yay for the pic being posted on her website. Unfortunately, the store was not set up for a Q&A signing, but to compensate, Kim let us each ask one quick question when we got to up to her. Of course I asked about Rachel and Trent in a relationship, even though I knew it would be a lost cause in getting a "real" answer. I just couldn't help myself. She said that she doesn't know yet because she hasn't written the final book yet, and even then she wouldn't tell. Then she just smiled at me. So, on the bright side she didn't say no, they have no chance. I mean that is a good thing right?

Here's the pics:

I brought my entire back-stock of books to be signed (Not including the two I already had signed). I only need 3 more Hollows books signed to have the complete set (The older hardcovers are hard to find, and I like my sets to match.) I even have all of the Madison books signed. So, I now own 12 SIGNED Kim Harrison books. YAY!!!

I'm giving away a signed copy of the first book in the Madison Avery series, Once Dead, Twice Shy.

Something Deadly This Way Comes

Something Deadly This Way Comes by Kim Harrison
Madison Avery #3

I'm Madison Avery, in charge of heaven's hit squad . . . and fighting it all the way.

When Madison died the night of her prom, she knew her life would never be the same. Now she has a powerful amulet, a team of rogue angels by her side, and the ability to flash forward into the future to see the shape of destiny. And of course, now she's finally with Josh—a perfect boyfriend who doesn't even mind that she's dead.

But being dead has its disadvantages, too. Madison feels caught between the light and the dark, and between her real life and her timekeeper status. When Madison has the opportunity to get her body back—to be alive again—she faces her most difficult decision yet. If she claims it, she could return to being a normal girl—and have a chance at a real relationship with Josh. But would having the one thing she wants most in the world also mean giving up everything she's worked so hard for?

Ever since Madison was killed and thrust into leading the Dark Reapers as their Timekeeper on the side of Fate, her life has been one big chaotic mess. She would give almost anything to to change her fate and be just a normal girl again. However, she also realizes that the system must change, and she is just the girl for job. Well, the only girl that is. Everyone else seems content with the way things have been for a Milena or more. It's an uphill battle but one that she firmly believes in. Things get a little complicated when she finds her body and has the chance to step aside. Will she take that temptation to be normal again or will she step up and fight for what she believes in?

From the start of this series there has always been the looming conflict between fate and choice. Madison of course blurs those lines despite her fated role as the Dark Timekeeper placing her firmly on the dark side according to the Seraphs. She has a way of changing other people's (or reaper's) outlook on things. While she may think she is "ruining" them, I actually think in the long run she is helping them. By opening their eyes to new possibilities they are able to experience so much more than they ever did before. Of course the road is still very bumpy with plenty of obstacles in the way, but Madison just seems to be able to give them the "push" they need to get started. Heck, even her supposed exact opposite, Paul the rising Light Timekeeper, has been influenced by her. This fact, as well as many other things is what makes Madison a really fantastic character.

I really love the dynamic between the characters in this series. There is a whole lot of conflict between them, both external and internal. All of that comes to head in this book. I especially enjoyed seeing both Nakita and Barnabas start to accept their inner turmoils and turn those confused feelings into action and acceptance. Of course with Madison being the game changing influence that she is, they were bound to feel her influence. What does it mean when the Dark starts acting like the Light and the Light starts acting like the Dark? That is just one of the conflict the characters are dealing with. The important thing is not the actual changes, but the reasoning behind those new choices that will make all the difference.

As far as I understand, Something Deadly This Way Comes is the last installment in the Madison Avery Series. I feel it ending things rather well with a sense of completion. And yet... I also feel like there could be so much more as things ended not really with a resolution, but more of a clear path for the future instead. Personally I would love to see some of that future, so I'm crossing my fingers that in one format or another we will get more. This book took everything great from the series and combined it all together, ending in a very unexpected way. If you enjoyed the first two books, then this one won't disappoint.
