Early Review: Blazing the Trail by Deborah Cooke

Blazing the Trail by Deborah Cooke
Dragon Diaries #3

It’s almost Valentine’s Day, and Zoë Sorensson’s love life is heating up. Cute, loyal, and understanding, wolf shifter Derek is pretty much the perfect guy. He likes Zoë, and he knows what it’s like to have to keep a secret. Yet, Zoë can’t help but wish it was rebel rocker Jared asking her to the Valentine’s dance instead. But Jared’s too busy playing hot and cold with her heart, calling Zoë his dragon girl one minute and then taking special interest in her best friend the next.

Zoë is just about ready to breathe fire, especially once she uncovers a new threat that targets her friends. Although Zoë thought the Mages were defeated, they’re back and have invoked an old spell to give them new power – they plan to eliminate all shape shifters on the night of the big dance. Now, Zoë must lead an alliance of young shifters to battle the Mages and figure out exactly what – and who – she wants, before it all goes up in smoke…

Zoe did the impossible by bringing the remaining shifters together to form an alliance, so why can't she bring herself to choose a guy? On one hand she has the incredibly Derek who seems like the perfect match. He should be the obvious choice, but her heart seems to have a mind of its own. She just can't forget Jared, the sexy rocker who has come and gone from her life more times than she can count. But her relationship worries are the least of her problems. After destroying the power base of the Mages, their threat should have been a thing of the past. But now the Mages are brewing something more terrible than Zoe ever could have imagined. This time around, they aren't taking chances and plan to take all of the shifters out in one swift blow. It's up to Zoe and the other wildcards to take them out once and for all or risk their very extinction.

Zoe has come an incredibly long way since she was first introduced in Flying Blind. Her maturity level has really increased, and she takes the time to think things through before she acts. She's finally learning to trust her instincts. Granted, she still makes mistakes along the way, who doesn't? She's had a lot thrown at her in such a short time, and so much rests on her shoulders. I really admire how the good of the alliance between the shifters is always first priority in her mind. In fact, she's willing to sacrifice everything personally and emotionally for the good of the alliance if the situation calls for it. She's definitely proved herself and become the Wyvern all of the different shifters so desperately needed.

Above all, I was most impressed with the way Zoe handled her relationship issues. Prior to this point she had only been attracted to the inaccessible guys, the ones she could never have. First it was another Wyr which biologically couldn't have worked, then it was with the much older Jared who runs hot and cold with her constantly. After he left, she may have rushed into things a little fast with Derek because he was steadfast and she knew she could rely on him. But his loyalty alone can't make her love him, and I really like how she's finally taking a step back from things to really decide what she wants before she goes any further with anyone. This isn't your typical love triangle as she isn't really involved with either one, so there isn't any stringing along, and for that I am incredibly proud of her.

Blazing the Trail finishes the Dragon Diaries Trilogy in a really good place, but I'm not entirely sure whether the ending is a completely satisfying one. Don't get me wrong, the overall plot ties from the series are wound up, but things are just left too open to give me the sense of completion that I craved. Of course this could turn out to be a good thing if it is because Deborah has plans for these characters in the future. There were just so many possibilities that were opened up and I'd love to see where things go. But for now, I am mostly content and will just sit tight and hope for something more in the future when these great characters are a little older. Overall, Blazing the Trail was an impressive end to the Dragon Diaries that will definitely leave a smile on your face.

Release Day Review: Cursed by Benedict Jacka

, by Kt Clapsadl

Cursed by Benedict Jacka
Alex Versus #2

Benedict Jacka's acclaimed Alex Verus series continues with Cursed.

Since his second sight made him infamous for defeating powerful dark mages, Alex has been keeping his head down. But now he's discovered the resurgence of a forbidden ritual. Someone is harvesting the life-force of magical creatures—destroying them in the process. And draining humans is next on the agenda. Hired to investigate, Alex realizes that not everyone on the Council wants him delving any deeper. Struggling to distinguish ally from enemy, he finds himself the target of those who would risk their own sanity for power...

Alex knew returning to his invisible life wouldn't be an option after he defeated the dark mages in the previous installment, but even so he still tries to stay out of things. But when someone starts stealing the life-force of magical creatures, leaving them nothing more than empty husks, he knows he cannot stay on the sideline any longer. The Council has asked him to investigate this ancient ritual and the dark mages that are performing it. But as he goes searching for answers, he finds the lines between light and dark blurring. With no clear cut villain in sight, he will have to keep his wits about him if he wants to have any chance at making it out of this mess alive.

I still don't quite get Alex's character, but he is slowly growing on me. Now that I understand him and his motivations a little better, I understand why he makes the choices he does even if I don't agree with him. Although I will say it still baffles me how a man who can see future threads still winds up getting himself in so much trouble. If it weren't for his insatiable curiosity he wouldn't land himself in half the messes he does. For example, there is a character that he KNOWS is using enchantments to try and manipulate him, yet does he stay away this character? Nope, he dives right from the frying pan and into the fire, all the while telling himself he probably shouldn't since he doesn't know whether his emotions are real or not around this character. At this point I've pretty much given in to having a fond exasperation for him and his decisions.

I really enjoyed seeing Alex's growing attachment to others. Previously he was so closed off and wouldn't let anyone in. Honestly, I don't blame him considering how many times he has gotten burned in the past, but it still makes for a lonely existence to shut everyone else out. He's gone from having absolutely no attachments, to having several good allies and a network to potentially call on for assistance, as well as a new apprentice. Of course the latter causes him a great deal of headaches due to the responsibility, but I think the challenge will be really good for him. Perhaps keep his boredom and curiosity at bay just a little bit while he focuses on training his apprentice.

Just like in Fated, the threats seemed to come from many different sides, and it was always unclear who was friend or foe. However, this time around, things didn't feel quite as chaotic, which really helped my enjoyment of the book. Granted, I had things figured out long before the characters did, but I would much prefer that over the utter chaos of the first installment. It really let me take a step back and watch things unfurl for the characters. So, in the end I have to say Cursed was a much stronger book than the first. Between the character development and the high stakes action, I was hooked from very early on, and I definitely recommend it.

Betrayed Promotion & Giveaway

, by Kt Clapsadl

Today I'm happy to be helping to promote Betrayed by Ednah Walters. She's been gracious enough to provide a $100 Amazon giftcode for a giveaway! I'm super jealous of you guys getting to enter! ;)

Here's some info about Betrayed:

Lil isn't just an average teenager. She's one of the Nephilim--the descendants of humans and angels--which gives her some serious psi skills and a mission for redemption. Just when Lil thinks she's found a balance between her normal life with human friends and her training to become a Guardian, she's warned that someone close to her will betray her. When the boy she loves starts acting strangely and one of her human friends acquires a supernatural ability, Lil begins to realize that someone is manipulating the people she loves... and won't stop until she's been lured to the dark side.

Praise for Betrayed:
Just like Awakened, Betrayed has risen above all the other books in this genre. She has created such an amazing world for her Guardians & demons where good and evil are not as simple as it seems they should be. ~J. Whitus (Book Junkies) Walking On Bookshelves

I just love a spunky heroine so I was excited to keep reading about Lil, the demon hunter I got to know in Awakened (book one of The Guardian Legacy series). Walters takes the story and world she built so well in Awakened and adds in an intense plot with lots of twists to make for a strong sequel.~ Kelli (I'd So Rather Be Reading)

Lil is one of my favorite female leads, with all of the traits that you want a strong female lead to have. She's smart, strong, loyal and doesn't know how to back down.~ Missy (Missy's Reads & Reviews)

Lil has her work cut out for her in this book and she never failed me once!
There is action in this book as well as a lot of emotional turmoil.~ Cathy Garcia

About Ednah Walters:

I grew up reading Nancy Drew and Hardy boys mysteries and fell in love with books

I enjoy good love stories, tingly mysteries and epic adventures. When I finished my college and decided to be a stay-at-home mother, I devoured books like they were going out of production, until reading just wasn't enough. So I started to write.

I've written picture books (unpublished), contemporary and romantic suspense (under the pen name E. B. Walters), and finally YA fantasy (as Ednah Walters).

AWAKENED (2010) is the prequel to the YA series about the Nephilim, The Guardian Legacy series. BETRAYED(book # 1) is now available wherever books are sold, HUNTED (book # 2) will be released in February 2013 andFORGOTTEN (later in 2013).

My adult contemporary with or without suspense is about a west coast Irish-American family series. I've published four Fitzgerald books: SLOW BURN (April 5th 2011), MINE UNTIL DAWN (June 29th 2011), KISS ME CRAZY (Sept 25th 2011) and DANGEROUS LOVE (Jan 29th 2012)

When I'm not writing, I do things with my family, five children and my darling husband of 18 years. I live in a picturesque valley in northern Utah, the setting for my YA series.

It's Monday What Are You Reading (97)

, by Kt Clapsadl

It's Monday! What Are You Reading, is hosted by Book Journey, is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week. It is a great way to network with other bloggers, see some wonderful blogs, and put new titles on your reading list.

Here's my posts from the last week:

Arise by Tara Hudson (Early Review)
Tempest Rising by Tracy Deebs (Review)
Tempest Unleashed by Tracey Deebs (Early Review)

Arise was a really good follow up to Hereafter, and definitely shook things up. I can't wait to see what happens in the final installment.

I really enjoyed the first two Tempest books. Everything was so vivid, especially all of the ocean scenes. I will say that this love triangle is very different for me. I can't seem to pick a guy, which is really strange for me. Typically I pick a guy very early on and I'm stuck on him to the very bitter end unless he does something completely unforgivable. (And I can forgive a whole lot.) However in this series, I keep going back and forth between the two love interest like a ping pong ball. Definitely a
new experience for me.

On Tuesday I revealed the Cover and Description for House Rules by Chloe Neill as part of her Spring Fling tour. This is the 7th book in her Chicagoland series. Also, I've got several prizes to be given away including signed books, so make sure you check it out.

I'm continuing with my weekly plan to post the Bargain paperbacks/hardcovers and Kindle book deals that I find to share with you guys. For this past week's posting, here it is: Bargain Books & Kindle Deals

Also, if you haven't entered to win the Kindle Fire & $50 Amazon Gift card giveaway, you have until Wednesday to do so. :)

This Week's Question:

Show Me Your Cover: What are some of the worst book covers, but hold some of the best stories inside? Don't be embarrassed, show us your cover!

I love this series, but I cannot stand the covers. They are just boring and do not stand out at all. If I saw this in a book store, not knowing what it was, I would walk right on by.

This is another series that I’m not thrilled about the covers. In this case it isn’t that I strongly dislike them, but more blaze towards them. They are just boring, which is a shame because the content is anything but. I realize they were probably trying to portray the more sensual nature of the books, but I think they missed the overall mark.

I really dislike all of the covers in this series, but this one definitely tops the list. I mean come on! What is going on there? It just looks like a mess with an albino chick. Bleck! Also, I don’t know if I would consider the book to be one of the best stories, as the series has been slowly dwindling for me, but I have to give it props for the throwback to the early Anita days.

These covers stink. Plain and simple. They are nothing compared to the books.

So it isn’t that this cover is bad, it’s just that it doesn’t match the story. At all. Sophie is not a kick butt character in any way shape or form like these covers would lead you to believe. It drives me batty!

I’m not the biggest fan of the covers for this series, but this one is the worst. Georgina is supposed to be utter beauty and perfection, I mean the girl can choose her shape and features. I just don’t think this image portrays that, she just looks too plain to me.

I have to do one cover on the opposite side of things:

I love this cover. I mean isn’t it gorgeous. Too bad the story didn’t live up to it. In fact it earned an extremely rare 1 butterfly rating from me.  I was just expecting so much more than what I got. Thank goodness I had received a review e-copy, because I would have bought that book purely for the cover, and then really regretted it!

How about you guys? What are some of your picks disappointing covers that don’t live up to the story?

He’s a fallen angel. She’s a rockabilly reporter. Together they must solve a deadly string of murders plaguing the mortal and the immortal worlds.

Chicagoland Spring Fling Giveaway & Exclusive House Rules Cover Reveal

, by Kt Clapsadl

I am so excited to be participating in Chloe Neill's first annual Chicagoland Vampires Spring Fling Blog tour! Not only do I have an interesting factoid about Lindsey and great giveaways for you guys, but I am also hosting the exclusive cover art and cover copy reveal of House Rules, Chicagoland Vampires #7. So exciting!!!

About the Chicagoland Vampires Novels: Turned into a vampire against her will, twenty-eight-year-old Merit, the heroine of Chloe Neill’s New York Times bestselling series, found her way into the dark circle of Chicago’s vampire underground, where she learned there was more to supernaturals than met the eye—and more supernaturals than the public ever imagined. The sixth book in the series, BITING COLD, will be released on August 7, 2012.

Why I Love These Books: I'm a crazy fan of this series. It's hard to put into words just how much I love these books. The cast of characters is incredibly awesome, and I love the many different dynamics going on between them. All of the emotions in these books are so real that you feel them right along with the characters, from the highest highs to the lowest lows.

When asked what my favorite book in the series is, I would hands down say Biting Cold. I was lucky enough to receive an ARC and completely devoured it one setting. Trust me when I say that you guys will love it. But, as far as the already published books in this series go, my favorite one is Drink Deep. It would be easy for me to say that is because of the very ending events, but honestly that wouldn't be the truth. Yes those events made me insanely happy, but they were only such a small part of the book. What makes Drink Deep my favorite is because this is where Merit really started to come into her own as a vampire and shine. She's broken out of her shell to become something truly amazing, and I just loved seeing all that come to fruition. In fact, I'll be giving away a signed copy of Drink Deep as well as other goodies courtesy of Chloe later on in the post, so keep reading!

Did you Know?: Lindsey, a Cadogan House guard and Merit’s closest vampire girlfriend, has difficulty discriminating between certain colors. That’s why her room in Cadogan House is insanely colorful.

In case you'd like to see what I thought of each book (and a whole lot of fan girl gushing) here's links to my reviews:
  1. Some Girls Bite
  2. Friday Night Bites
  3. Twice Bitten
  4. Hard Bitten
  5. Drink Deep

Now for the moment you guys have been waiting for, I give you the cover art and cover copy reveal of House Rules!

House Rules -- Chicagoland Vampires #7
House Rules

In a city full of vampires, trouble never sleeps.

At the tender age of 27, Merit became a sword-wielding vampire. Since then, she’s become the protector of her House,
watched Chicago nearly burn to the ground, and seen her Master fall and rise. Now she’ll see her mettle—and her metal —tested like never before.

It started with two . . . Two rogues vanishing without a trace. Someone is targeting Chicago’s vampires, and anyone
could be next. With their house in peril, Merit and her Master, the centuries old Ethan Sullivan, must race to stop the disappearances. But as they untangle a web of secret alliances and ancient evils, they realize their foe is more familiar, and more powerful, than they could have ever imagined.

Isn't is gorgeous? I just absolutely love how badass Merit looks. The red in her shirt and title really makes it pop! And that description!! I'm even more excited for House Rules. February cannot get here soon enough!!

One winner will receive a signed copy of Drink Deep + Swag

One winner will receive a signed copy of Charmfall + Swag

SWAG!!!!- Up to four winners will receive a Swag Pack (I won't know how much I have to give away until the package arrives)

 Swag Items include:
