The Maker's Song #4

SON OF A FALLEN ANGEL. FORGED IN VAMPIRE’S BLOOD. SWORN TO A MORTAL WOMAN. IF DANTE FALLS, THE WORLD FALLS WITH HIM. . . . THREE LEGACIES ETCHED IN BONE
More beautiful and powerful than any creature the world has ever seen, Dante Baptiste has become the supreme target of the three worlds that spawned him. The mortal agents of the Shadow Branch have tried to control his mind through psychological torture. The vampire elders who guide nightkind society have plotted to use him in their bloodthirsty bid for power. And the Fallen have waited for millennia for Dante to claim his birthright as their Maker. But Dante belongs to no one—except the woman he loves. . . .
ONE PASSION SWORN IN BLOOD
Determined to face the Fallen and the world on his own terms, Dante hopes to piece together his shattered past and claim his future, with FBI agent Heather Wallace at his side. But in Heather’s human family awaits an unexpected enemy. One who could rip Heather from Dante’s heart and fill the holes with bullets. One who could force Dante to choose his darkest destiny—as the Great Destroyer. . . .

At the end of the last book Dante had rescued his father and gained a set of wings. However, in this book we found that rescue came at a price. Dante is blood sworn to return to the Fallen in two weeks time. The bond between Heather and Dante means she is potentially bound too. In their two week respite, Dante and crew sets out for vengeance for their murdered companion. Meanwhile all the other factions are continuing on in their plans to either destroy or use Dante, making him have a giant target on his back. Danger is also looming on another front, this one targeted right at Heather. It will take everything they have to just stay together and hold on long enough to face what is coming at them.

This book was a very frustrating read for me. I absolutely love the characters, and want to read more of their "stories" however with each new installment, things get more convoluted and weighed down by just too much happening. There is no clear cut line between the good guys and the bad, with some characters seeming to switch sides on a whim. It is extremely hard to really get into a book when you can't take anything at face value, and you have to question everything that is going on. After the umpteenth change in perspective, I find myself wanting to just give up on the series, as what drew me to the series in the first place, Dante and Heather, have taken such an extreme back seat.

The issues just seem to keep being repeated over and over with no real progress. Considering the length of this novel you would think some progression would have been made. But no, Dante is still having sanity issues as well as the seizures and migraines. Everyone under the sun is out to either kill or use him for their own desires. Heather of course is still right in the middle trying to protect him, and is the only thing keeping his tenuous hold on sanity.

This series has just been going downhill for me, which is a real shame as I had high hopes for this installment. I will more than likely still read the next book because of how things were left at the end of this one. There is a slight chance that things will pick up more in the next book as this one could have been the setup for the major changes. If not, then I'm not sure how much more time I'll invest. So, I'm crossing my fingers and hoping the next one will bring thing back around.

Beneath the Skin

Beneath the Skin by Adrian Phoenix
The Maker's Song #3

CHAOS CONTROLS HIS FUTURE. ONE MORTAL WOMAN COULD BE HIS SALVATION. THE COUNTDOWN TO ANNIHILATION WILL BEGIN WITH DANTE'S CHOICE....

THE FATE OF THREE WORLDS...
The dark pieces of vampire rock star Dante Baptiste's past are violently emerging, and it is only a matter of time before the Fallen discover he is the creawdwr they have sought for thousands of years. The destruction he left behind in Oregon threatens to reveal his identity as Fallen Maker and True Blood, exposing the young nightkind to shadowy predators — mortal and supernatural — who will do whatever it takes to win his favor...or destroy him.

RESTS IN DANTE'S HANDS.
When beautiful FBI special agent Heather Wallace went AWOL on assignment, she chose irresistible Dante over the shady government forces that now stalk them both. Heather has her own secrets of the past to uncover, but she is also the only one who can hold her nightkind lover together when his dangerous quest for the truth threatens to send him over the edge. And as she and Dante fight for their survival, she realizes they must work together to protect their future — before his mysterious destiny tears them apart....

At the ending of the last book, Dante had done some incredibly powerful and scary "magic" against the Fallen who were trying to claim. This book picks up right away, with Dante, Heather, Von, and Annie on the run from both the FBI and other agencies as well as any more Fallen who could be hunting Dante. Unfortunately, Dante's nasty past has caught up with him and threatens to consume his mind. With everyone gunning for both her lover and herself, Heather knows she must continue to protect Dante, as she is the only thing that can help him keep his thin hold on sanity. What she doesn't know is just how important him keeping his sanity is, for he has the power to make or unmake anything, and it is his destiny to change the world.

In my review of the last book I expressed some frustration with the amount of perspective changes and the difficultly in keeping track of everyone's agenda. I was hoping that this book would be a little better aspect, but it was actually much worse. There were just too many side characters all with their own plans, some hidden, some not. It was impossible to keep track of it all, and I felt that really detracted from the story. I would have preferred a whole lot more Dante/Heather time, at least I know what their agenda is.

In the little amount of time the book spend on the main characters, there was one thing that stood out to me, whenever the perspective got sucked into Dante's head. Through these glimpses we got to see just how torments and tortured he is by the unspeakable horrors of his past that the despicable people put him through. It is almost amusing that they were trying to mold him into a sociopath so they could study him, when all they had to do was turn the "camera" around on themselves. Then they would have seen the true sociopaths.

I really love the concept of this series and the main characters are really great, but I'm really having a hard time getting through the books, and each one is harder than the last. I plan to stick it out because like I said, the main characters are great, and I want to know what happens to them, but I am almost to the point where I want to skip any scene that isn't about Dante, Heather, Von, or Lucien. I'm still holding out hope for things to get better as there is such potential in this series, but I won't hold my breath. I'm rating this a 3 based on the main characters alone, otherwise it would be lower.

Giveaway and Interview with Chloe Neill

, by Kt Clapsadl

Today on the blog I have an interview with fantastic author, Chloe Neill. Her Chicagoland series is one of my all time favorites, and the latest book releases next week. I cannot wait!

1. How many books do you have planned for this series? Any hints you can give us for what is in store?

There are currently seven books under contract. You'll have to keep reading to learn more, but I can say that we'll see Merit undertake lots of different adventures!

2. I can't wait! How do you choose your character names?

I use a baby name book (or similar lists on the internet) and keep looking until I find the name that fits the character best. Merit was pretty quick. Ethan took a long time!

3. I love Merit's name and I think Ethan fits him very well. If your book were to made into a movie who would be your top picks for the cast?

I like Jill Flint as Merit and Chris Hemsworth (from the new THOR movie) as Ethan.

4. Wow those two are perfect choices. Chris sure makes for a smoking Ethan that's for sure! What are some of your favorite books in the paranormal genre?

I read the BDB books, of course, as well as Kim Harrison and Rachel Caine's Weather Warden series. I'm so bummed that one is complete!

Dark Lover (Black Dagger Brotherhood, Book 1)Lover Eternal (Black Dagger Brotherhood, Book 2)Ill Wind (Weather Warden, Book 1)Heat Stroke (Weather Warden, Book 2)

5. I'm a big fan of those series as well! If you could tell readers one thing about yourself or your books what would that be?

I'm not sure there's anything pertinent they don't already know! How about, I love to read interior design blogs?

6. Have you always wanted to be a writer, and how long did it take you to achieve your dream?

Not at all. I used to hate writing, but I did it a lot for various jobs and in college. I started writing in 2005. SOME GIRLS BITE was the second manuscript I wrote.

7. Sounds like you got lucky, but it really isn't a surprise considering how fantastic Some Girls Bite is. Any advice for aspiring authors?

Read and write every day. Writing can always improve, and reading is crucial to help instill solid technique and to give the writer information to back up their writing. Read fiction, nonfiction, short pieces and long. And do your research before submitting material to publisher.

8. Good advice! Do you have any passions other than reading or writing?

I love to bake. I also enjoy decorating my home and playing with my dogs.

9. Finish this statement: "You'll like the Chicagoland Vampires Series if"

If you enjoy urban fantasy or paranormal romance, humor and wit, and kick-ass heroines!

Thanks for having me today!

Thanks so much Chloe! Make sure to check out the latest book in the Chicagoland Vampires series, Hard Bitten (Chicagoland Vampires, Book 4).

Author Info:

I was born and raised in the South, but now make my home in the Midwest, just close enough to Cadogan House and St. Sophia's to keep an eye on things. When not transcribing Merit’s and Lily's adventures, I bake (a lot!), watch entirely too much television, root for my favorite college football team (Go Big Red!), spend time with friends and my beau, Jeremy, and play with my dogs, Baxter and Scout.

In the Blood

, by Kt Clapsadl

In the Blood by Adrian Phoenix
The Maker's Song #2

DANTE LIVES.
Vampire. Rock star. Begotten son of the fallen angel Lucien. Dante Baptiste still struggles with nightmares and seizures, searching for the truth about his past. It is a quest as seductive as his kiss, as uncontrollable as his thirst, and as unforgiving as his determination to protect one mortal woman at any cost.

KNOWLEDGE KILLS.
FBI Special Agent Heather Wallace now knows the extent of the Bureau corruption that surrounds her, but worries she is losing the battle. And when Dante and his band Inferno come to Seattle on tour, Heather can't help but be drawn back to the beautiful, dangerous nightkind. But what Heather and Dante don't know is that new enemies lurk in the shadows, closer than they think...and even deadlier than they fear.

DESTINY UNFOLDS.
Shadowy government forces have pledged to eliminate all loose ends from Project Bad Seed -- and Heather and Dante are at the top of the list. Elsewhere, the Fallen gather in Gehenna, intent on finding their long-awaited savior, the True Blood nightkind whom Lucien DeNoir would die to protect. And a damaged and desperate adversary, with powers as strange and perilous as Dante's own, plots to use Dante as a pawn in a violent scheme for revenge. But only one of these lethal forces holds the key to Dante's past -- a key that could finally unlock the secret of his birth and the truth of his existence...or destroy him completely.

Heather was determined to keep her nose down and act like she didn't know anything she shouldn't, but the bureau didn't buy it and she was placed at the top of the hit list along with Dante. When Dante comes to Seattle on tour and the two meet, things get a little hairy as they constantly get targeted. An unlikely suspect also is plotting to get a hold of Dante for their own agenda, perhaps the worst one yet. It's becoming harder and hard to discern friend from foe, and Dante and Heather must stick together if they are going to have any chance at survival

I knew that Heather and Dante wouldn't be able to stay away from each other for very long. The attraction between them is incredible, and whether either one of them realizes it or not, they both are falling head over heels in love. It amuses me how blind they both are, but I think in the end they will wind up together. It's is just going to take some determination on their part to stick together in spite of everyone else seeming to plot against them.

It was pretty hard to keep track of who was who, and whose side each person was on, especially with the constant shifting of perspectives. There were so many different angles going on that at some point I just resolved myself to assume everyone but a very select few are out to get them. It was a little easier that way because they all seemed to have their own secret objectives and reasons for wanting Dante and/or Heather. By the end of the book it was a little bit more clear who was who, but even then it was still a little confusing.

All in all I enjoyed the book, even more so once I stopped trying to remember what each opposing person's agenda was. Hopefully things will become a little more clear in the next book as the factions against the two of them show themselves. I also hope the point of view will not switch around quite as much, as that will really lessen a lot of the confusion as well. I really love the main characters, and I hope to see more of them together in the next book.

Rush of Wings

, by Kt Clapsadl

Rush of Wings by Adrian Phoenix
The Maker's Song #1

HIS NAME IS DANTE.
Dark. Talented. Beautiful. Star of the rock band Inferno. Rumored owner of the hot New Orleans nightspot Club Hell. Born of the Blood, then broken by an evil beyond imagination.
HIS PAST IS A MYSTERY.
F.B.I. Special Agent Heather Wallace has been tracking a sadistic serial murderer known as the Cross Country Killer, and the trail has led her to New Orleans, Club Hell, and Dante. But the dangerously attractive musician not only resists her investigation, he claims to be "nightkind": in other words, a vampire. Digging into his past for answers reveals little. A juvenile record a mile long. No social security number. No known birth date. In and out of foster homes for most of his life before being taken in by a man named Lucien DeNoir, who appears to guard mysteries of his own.
HIS FUTURE IS CHAOS.
What Heather does know about Dante is that something links him to the killer — and she's pretty sure that link makes him the CCK's next target. Heather must unravel the truth about this sensual, complicated, vulnerable young man — who, she begins to believe, may indeed be a vampire — in order to finally bring a killer to justice. But Dante's past holds a shocking, dangerous secret, and once it is revealed not even Heather will be able to protect him from his destiny....

FBI agent Heather has one major goal in life, to stop serial killers, and speak for their victims. The current killer she is chasing, the Cross Country Killer, has been her target for three years. She gets her first major break when the case gets directly linked to a man named Dante who claims to be nightkind. When she realizes he just may the killer's next target she is determined to protect Dante even if he doesn't think he needs it. Tensions spark between them, both angry and sexual, and it has Heather questioning her motives. She'll need to keep a clear head if she wants to keep both her's and Dante's attached.

I enjoyed the characters in this book. Heather is determined to find the truth and speak for the victims. She also isn't afraid to stand up and do what she feels is right, even if it means landing herself in a major pot of hot water. Dante, on the other hand is definitely the sexy bad boy that you probably want to stay away from, but can't help but be drawn to. He is very stubborn, to the point of sheer stupidity at times, but also has a softer side that shows itself every once in a while. I think the two of them complement each other nicely and in time will be a great couple, as long as they don't let their own bullheadedness to get in the way.

There was one thing that really frustrated me about this book. Dante and the rest of his "people" all speak a lot of Cajun, and as I have no background in neither french, nor cajun, (I took Spanish in high school), it was hard to figure out what they were saying at times. Granted, she does have a cajun glossary in the back of the book, but it wasn't overly helpful after the fact. Since I read on the kindle, I couldn't have just flipped back and forth while reading to look it up, and that was a little frustrating. I'm hoping now that I've read it, I'll have a little bit better of an understanding of the dialect in the next book.

This is definitely one of those books that you have to really pay close attention to or you will get lost. Both the reader and the characters are kept almost completely in the dark, and it was very confusing at times. That being said, it held my attention well and I think as the series continues and the secrets of the past get slowly revealed, things will start to fall into place. I will say that it is very suspenseful, and kept me on the edge of my seat trying to figure out the answers. I'm really eager to continue on to the next book and hopefully unraveling the mystery that is Dante.

It's Monday! What are you reading (40)

, by Kt Clapsadl

It's Monday! What Are You Reading, hosted by Book Journey, is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week. It is a great way to network with other bloggers, see some wonderful blogs, and put new titles on your reading list.

Here's what I read this past week:

Angelfire (Angelfire - Trilogy)Magic on the Hunt (Allie Beckstrom, Book 6)Firewalker (Stormwalker, Book 2)Stormwalker (Stormwalker Series, Book 1)

Angelfire by Courtney Allison Moulton (Review)
Magic on the Hunt by Devon Monk (Review)
Firewalker by Allyson James (Review)
Stormwalker by Allyson James (Review)

I read Angelfire, Courtney Allison Moulton's YA debut. I enjoyed the book, but a lot of it frustrated me. The most frustrating aspect was the reasoning behind the tension and "forbidding" aspect of the two main characters trying to be together. I just didn't find their allow that reason to actually keep them apart. I'm really hoping that changes in the next book.

Magic on the Hunt, the latest release in the Allie Beckstrom series was everything I have come to expect from Devon Monk's books. There was plenty of danger and action and there were many revelations in this book. I feel like everything has been winding up and this book things to the very edge. I have a feeling things will be stepped up even further now that the stakes have been majorly raised.

Finally I read the first two books in the Stormwalker series. I really love the two main characters and their chemistry and sexual tension is off the charts. If you like urban fantasies that are also full of romance and steaminess, then you won't want to miss these. I mean how can you go wrong with dragon shifters?

My upcoming list:

Rush of Wings by Adrian Phoenix
In the Blood by Adrian Phoenix
Beneath the Skin by Adrian Phoenix
Etched in Bone by Adrian Phoenix

Stormwalker

, by Kt Clapsadl

Stormwalker by Allyson James
Stormwalker #1

Janet Begay is a Stormwalker, capable of wielding the raw elemental power of nature, a power that threatens to overwhelm her. Only her lover, Mick, is able to calm the storm within her - even as their passion reaches unimaginable heights of ecstasy.

But when an Arizona police chief's daughter is taken by a paranormal evil, they find themselves venturing where no human can survive-for only together can they overcome the greatest danger they've ever faced.

Janet, a powerful Stormwalker, has been running from her past and a mother who wants to enslave her for her evils purposes for a very long time. However, when she gets a job to investigate a suspicious disappearance near her mother's reach, she knows it's time to step up and face her "demons." She'll need the help of her long absent lover, Mick as well as some tricks up her sleeve to resist temptation and take down the greatest force of evil she's ever known.

From the start of the book it is obvious that Janet is still head over heels in love with Mick even though she left him over five years ago. So when he showed back up in her life it came at no surprise that she couldn't help herself but to let him stay. I really love the tension between the two as they both try to fight their own natures to be with one another. The heat between them practically sizzles right off the page, yet even the great physical chemistry has a hard time bridging the huge chasm between them. Janet is a very independent person who needs honesty and trust in a relationship and for her man to treat her as an equal. Mick is very secretive by nature and wants to protect Janet so much that he winds up smothering her. The couple has more than enough issues to keep them apart, but I can't help but hope they will be able to keep it together as they make for one awesome team, both in the bedroom and outside of it.

The world behind this book is really fascinating. It appears that the supernatural are "out of the closet," but that a lot of people refuse to acknowledge nor believe in it, even when unexplainable things are shoved right in their face. The characters are full of depth, both the main and the supporting ones, making me care for all of them. I found Mick's true nature to be absolutely fascinating. I won't say what that is, but I will say that it knocks his sexiness up tenfold. The twist with Nash, the hard-ass Sheriff kept things interesting. All these parts added together made this a really great read.

This book read very quickly as I just could not put it down. It had the perfect blend of romance, heat, action and character development to keep me coming back for more. Things were wrapped up well in the end, but I can't help but wonder if the solution was only a temporary one. Huge evils like the one Janet and Mick faced don't go down easy, and they have a nasty habit of coming back after you thought you already "saved the day." I'm very eager to read the next installment for hopefully some more great action between Janet and Mick. If you like a book that has plenty of spice but still has a great plot, then this one is for you.

Firewalker

, by Kt Clapsadl

Firewalker by Allyson James
Stormwalker #2

Janet Begay's Crossroads Hotel has attracted the supernatural ever since it opened. But a new, dark power is rising, this time inside Janet herself. Her boyfriend Mick, a sexy dragon shapeshifter the Navajo call a Firewalker, know what terrifying magic is threatening to overwhelm Janet and her Stormwalker powers. He watches over her, ready to fight for her, to do anything to keep her safe.

But then a mysterious corpse is found near the Crossroads Hotel-and Janet becomes the main suspect. Now Janet and Mick must uncover what really happened, and their investigation leads to the most perilous decision of their lives...

To save Janet from the rest of the dragons, Mick declared her his mate. Now he has to deal with the repercussions of that choice and his life is on the line. His upcoming trial spells impending doom and Janet is beside herself with worry. Meanwhile her beneath powers have been acting up, reigniting the target on her back. To make matters worse a viciously brutalized corpse shows up, and it's up to Janet to find and stop him, even if it means using powers she swore not to. Sometimes the safety of others requires drastic measures, even if it could cost Janet her life in the end.

The fire and sizzle between Janet and Mick was stronger than ever in this book, but they seem to be stuck. They may love each other to a certain extent, but neither one truly trusts the other. I understand that Mick's original purpose in seeking Janet out was to destroy her for the threat she is. Every time she shows any of her beneath powers he starts to question her and looks at her like she is about to turn on him. He's said many times that he would never kill her, yet several times he acts like he will do just that if she doesn't keep herself in check. They won't be able to move forward if he doesn't decide once and for all whether or not he believes she is worth saving. He should realize by now that she is not evil, and will use her powers for good.

I was a little disappointed in the inner struggle that Janet was supposedly going through. It just wasn't realistic to me as I never once believed she would just turn "evil" out of the blue. Yes, her beneath powers have gotten stronger, and they are very seductive. However, that doesn't change the core factor that Janet is good at heart and has a tremendous amount of compassion for others. I found more worry in the dragon issue than anything else, even though that only played a smart part of the book since so much was focused on her own struggles.

This book was a pretty good read despite my few complaints. The resolution of the book and also the twist at the end should make the next book quite interesting. The twist came out of no-where and completely caught me off guard. I can't wait to see what trouble this new issue causes. I'm really enjoying this series, and the characters are really great. I'd recommend reading the first book before this one as it really helps set things up, and gives you a better background on the characters. This is definitely a series to watch out for as it is full of danger, action, steamy sex, and plenty of character development to keep you more than entertained.

Magic on the Hunt

, by Kt Clapsadl

Magic on the Hunt by Devon Monk
Allie Beckstrom #6

In the secret lockup of the Authority, the council that decides what can and can't be done with magic, an undead magic user has possessed one of the prisoners. He wants his freedom-and then some. Now Allie Beckstrom and her lover, Zayvion, are the first line of defense against the chaos he's about to unleash on the city of Portland...

They say there is no rest for the weary and this holds true as Allie and Zayvion can't ever seem to catch a break. With only three days of rest since the last book's fiasco, and Zay's almost death, they get attacked. This is only the start of a whirlwind of catastrophes that threaten everything they have worked so hard to protect. A very dangerous undead man has found a body to possess down in the depths of the Authority's maximum security prison. Between tracking down the man that attacked them, and cleaning up the mess the possessed is making, Allie and Zayvion can barely hold things together. Luckily they have a little help from Terric and Shame, but even they might not be enough to stop what is coming.

From the start, Allie and Zayvion have been warned to keep some semblance of a distance from each other, as being soul complements can be extremely dangerous. In this book they get a further glance as to why that is. I think that as time goes on it will become even more difficult for them to keep their souls separate. I could be slightly delusional, but A, I don't think they will ever lose the ability to separate themselves if they join again, and B, I just don't think they will take the crazy train like the rest of the soul complements they have known. They just really seem to have a connection that will beat the odds, and somehow get the happily ever after that has been denied to so many others. One can only hope.

Things that have been hidden are really starting to unravel, and the ones responsible for the insane mess the Authority has been dealing with recently have finally been revealed. To be honest I had some suspicions early on as to who was truly behind things, but even so some of the revelations still caught me off guard. So many people were really not who everyone thought they were. The good guys are actually bad and some of the bad ones are actually trying to do good. Everything has been shaken up, and the repercussions will have to be dealt with. Things have been escalating for several books, even now that Allie and friends know who is actually to blame, they are still a long way from being able to stop everything once and for all.

I really loved this book, and how everything seems to be coming together, or at least a little more clear. I've had the sense that the past few books have been leading to something big, and while I am not quite sure we have seen that "big" thing yet, I think this book really paved the way. The only thing that worries me about this is that could also mean that the series is starting to wind down. I certainly hope that isn't the case as I love these characters too much to say goodbye to them yet. Congratulations to Ms. Monk for yet another great installment in the fantastic Allie Beckstrom series.
