The Keep by Veronica Wolff
The Watchers #4

JUST BECAUSE YOU WORK FOR THE DEAD DOESN'T MEAN YOU WANT TO JOIN THEM.

Drew has just started her second year on the Isle of Night, and the weather isn't the only thing changing drastically. She has ascended to the rank of Initiate. She’s also found an intimate love in the handsome vampire, Carden. But most of all, she no longer dreams of escape. She dreams of vengeance.

Her friend, Emma, was brutally wounded by the savage vampire Alcántara, and may have been taken to the dreaded castle, from which none of the living return. But there are so many different stories from so many people with so many of their own deceits and machinations, Drew can’t be sure of anything—except that she must find a way into the castle to discover the truth and take down Alcántara once and for all.

But Drew isn’t the only one out for revenge. Someone very dangerous on the island is also out for blood…

Hers…

Drew may have survived her first year at Isle of Night, but she is far from safe. Despite her bond and relationship with Carden, a very old, very mysterious vampire, she still isn't satisfied with life on the island. She's determined to have vengeance for her lost friend Emma, who may or may not be alive. All she knows is that Emma was taken to the castle, the one place no human ever returns from. Between warding off attacks left and right and plotting a way to take down the vamps that control her, Drew may have just bitten off more than she can chew. If she isn't careful she'll the next one to never be heard from again.

I love Drew's character, but she also really frustrates me at the same time. She's so strong and despite being tested over and over again, somehow manages to hold onto her humanity, which I find to be incredibly impressive. Yet, she's also incredibly hard headed, especially when it comes to information that she wants. No matter how many others tell her to let something go, she ignores them and put herself and others at great risk in her quests to find the information. I understand not just swallowing what she's told, but a lot of her behavior just sparked me as selfish whenever she would put others, particularly Ronan, in extreme danger due to her stunts. It's one thing to continually risk her own life, but it really bothered me that she kept doing it even though she knew the dangerous position she was putting others in. Honestly, I think if she spent a little more time planning out things, she'd still be able to get her answers, but with much less risk. She truly could be a force to be reckoned with if she just used that brain of hers a little more rather than just reacting.

I absolutely adore the bond between Carden and Drew. It's so sweet and innocent, yet incredibly dangerous at the same time. I really enjoy seeing how it makes the normally tough as nails Drew lose some of her confidence and act like a normal inexperienced girl. Carden, despite being a vampire in a world where it seems like being a vampire means pure evil, seems to genuinely care for Drew above and beyond just what the bond makes him feel. I really loved how he was always so fiercely protective of her and always knew what to do or say to brighten her day. Of course it isn't all roses between them as if their bond were to be discovered, it could be deadly for one or both of them. And of course Carden was rather frustrating at times in his need to protect Drew by shielding information from her. Which really wound up being pointless as she put herself in much more danger as she went out in search of those answers on her own. But it was still fun to see the dance between them as they test the limits of what their bond means for them, and I can only hope that somehow in the future they will find a way to escape together.

I've said this before in a previous review, but it bears repeating. As much as I enjoy this series, the lack of real momentum in the series. Don't get me wrong, there's plenty of action in each book to keep me more than entertained, but the overall series arc doesn't seem to be getting anywhere. As in I don't feel any closer to getting answers for all the burning questions that I have than when I started the book. It just seems that with every small bit of information revealed, five more unanswered things replace it. That being said, there was a pretty huge shakeup at the end of THE KEEP that I think could really help push the momentum forward in this series, and if I'm right will push this series from good to fantastic in my book. But as far as this  book goes, THE KEEP was an entertaining read that I highly recommend to fans of the series.

Kirsten Reviews: The Mist-Torn Witches by Barb Hendee

, by Kt Clapsadl

The Mist-Torn Witches by Barb Hendee
The Mist-Torn Witches #1

National bestselling author Barb Hendee presents a dark, fascinating new series set in the world of the Noble Dead Saga... the story of two sisters who will discover they have far more power than they ever envisioned...

In a small village in the nation of Droevinka, orphaned sisters Céline and Amelie Fawe scrape out a living selling herbal medicines in their apothecary shop. Céline earns additional money by posing as a seer and pretending to read people’s futures.

But they exist in a land of great noble houses, all vying for power, and when the sisters refuse the orders of a warlord prince, they must flee and are forced to depend on the warlord prince’s brother, Anton, for a temporary haven.

A series of bizarre deaths of pretty young girls are plaguing the village surrounding Prince Anton’s castle. He offers Céline and Amelie permanent protection if they can use their "skills" to find the killer.

With little choice, the sisters enter a world unknown to them — of fine gowns and banquets and advances from powerful men. Their survival depends on catching a murderer who appears to walk through walls and vanish without a trace — and the danger around them seems to grow with each passing night.

The Mist-Torn Witches by Barb Hendee is a well-constructed fantasy with two likeable, and interesting main characters. The story relies firstly on the world-building that Hendee has done, and more heavily on the sisters, Amelie, and Celine, whose story is followed from a very young age when they lose their mother and have to figure out how to survive on their own.

One of the sisters, Celine is pretending to take after her mother in being a Seer and apothecary. But, while Celine is only acting as if she has the gift at first, it appears that some things come to those who act like they already have them. Suffice to say, Celine is soon coping with the Sight and running her mother’s apothecary shop with the help of Amelie. Having learned to protect themselves while literally trying to survive, they depend heavily on one another, and have to grow up fast. They aren’t all-powerful, and don’t think that’s in their future, but what they lack in power, they make up for in grit, and their love for one another.

Celine is coping with her gift as well as trying to take care of her sister, making mistakes and trying to do better the next time. Amelie is, in contrast to her sister, much more of a tomboy, interested in legends, magic, and the history of their family, which figures heavily into the plot. She’s something of a card shark, and doesn’t care for getting dressed up in nice clothes when she can do something more rough and tumble instead.

The secondary characters include a prince in jeopardy, which is a nice switch from the traditional ‘prince saves damsel’ trope, and the sisters are determined to get to the truth, even when things get increasingly dangerous for them. While there is no outright romance in this book, the author has laid what is likely the groundwork for that in future books, and hopefully it won’t take away from the focus on Celine and Amelie. This is one book where two sisters are not only united, but help others, and combined with a vivid world, and a prince who needs to be rescued, it makes for a fun read.

Covet Feature Author: Tiffany Allee

, by Kt Clapsadl

As many of you may know, I'm a Publicist for Entangled Publishing, and I'm a huge paranormal fan. So, I'm so excited that we have launched our new Paranormal Romance line, Covet!! Covets have all the sexiness, emotion, and happily ever after that readers have come to expect and love from Entangled. They are firmly grounded in the contemporary world, but each novel brings in supernatural twists, breaking the contemporary and paranormal rules, alike. To find out more about our launch titles, chat with authors, participate in special events, and to find out what books you’ll be coveting next, visit the Entangled website, follow us on Twitter, and LIKE our Facebook page.

Over the next several weeks I'll be featuring our authors from this fabulous new line as they each tell us about their top 5 favorite paranormal characters. Today's guest is Tiffany Allee, who just happens to be one of my personal authors. I'm really in love with her latest release, Don't Bite the Bridesmaid, which is a sexy, fun and lighthearted vampire romance romp. So, please join me in welcoming Tiffany!

First of all, thank you so much for inviting me today to talk about my favorite supernatural characters! I’ll admit that I’m something of a paranormal addict, and restricting this list to five was pretty brutal. Maybe I could have done a top twenty list…or fifty. So let’s just say that this is my top five for today. ;-)

Buffy
Source

I know, technically Buffy is now in the realm of being old school, but I love her, and I love everything about the show. The hotness of Angel and Spike. The amazing friendship she has with Willow and Xander. The awesomeness of Giles. I miss the whole Scooby gang.

Buffy is one my favs because she manages to be tough, smart, and vulnerable at the same time. And the witty dialogue of Joss Whedon always makes me happy.

Bran Cornick

From the Mercy Thompson books, Bran falls solidly in the side character arena, but to me, he’s fascinating—maybe even more fascinating than some of the main characters. As the werewolves’ leader, you’d think he’d be intimidating and scary. Okay, he’s a little intimidating and scary, but only when he wants to be. Otherwise he blends in, a seemingly average young-looking man. I think I love him best for his sneaky factor, and that he always has Mercy’s back when she needs him.

Monroe
Source

From the television show Grimm, Monroe is a…well he’s something like a werewolf. To be honest, with all the German (or German-inspired) naming conventions on the show, I have a difficult time remembering the technical names for the creatures that inhabit this world. But Monroe as a character is difficult to forget. Not only is a red-eyed werewolf(ish thing), he’s also a vegetarian. He is always willing to step up and help the show’s main character, Nick. And he is the first in line to do the right thing. Plus he’s pretty darn adorable—especially with his girlfriend, Rosalee.

Kate Daniels

What can I say about Kate Daniels? She embodies the term ‘kickass heroine’ and she doesn’t apologize for it. But she isn’t just a badass, she’s also a very human woman with her own issues and pain. And she’s the first to step up to defend the people she cares about, and her city.

Eric Northman
Source
Oh…Eric. No matter how you feel about how the Southern Vampires series ended, you have to acknowledge the extreme hotness of the Viking vampire, Eric. He’s passionate, protective, and a far better person…err vampire…than he wants publically known. I fell for him hard during the early books in the series, and am still convinced he’s about as hot as hot can get. Alexander Skarsgard playing him in the television show did nothing to dispel this belief. ;-)

And now I have to go dig out some old Buffy DVDs. It’s research, you understand.

Thanks Tiffany! Love the choices, particularly Bran and Kate, and Eric.. Crap, well all of them!!

But she makes it quite clear that there will be no funny business.

Spending a week on a cruise ship full of humans while sleeping close to his sexy next-door neighbor sounds like a helluva bad idea to vampire Noah Thorpe. But his friends need time to get him out of a shotgun wedding—a vampire bonding that will tie his fate to a female vampire he's never met. And Alice's offer comes at just the right time.

Early Review: Darkness Unmasked by Keri Arthur

, by Kt Clapsadl

Darkness Unmasked by Keri Arthur
Dark Angels # 5

Keri Arthur's explosive Dark Angels series is packed with everything you could want: a fiesty heroine, witches, vampires, werewolves, demons, angels of death, suspense and a whole lot of sexy action.

The sexy, exciting, suspenseful adventures continue in New York Times bestselling author Keri Arthur's Dark Angels series, starring Risa Jones, a half-Aedh/half-werewolf. She can speak to the souls of the dying and the dead, and can see Reapers, the collectors of souls.

Shortly after her fight on the astral plane, Risa receives a phone call from Madeline Hunter, the leader of the vampire council, ordering her to investigate the death of Hunter's close friend and lover - Wolfgang Schmidt. His body has been discovered wrapped in a web-like substance and has been completely drained. As the body count continues to grow, Risa must summon her gifts to find the dark spirit before it strikes again.

Meanwhile, as the search for the keys that keep the gate to Hell closed grows more intense, Risa begins to unravel mysteries that will have startling consequences for her.

Risa can never seem to catch a break. She hasn't had any time to recover from her last near death experience (and there has been many), yet Madeline Hunter, vamp council leader and complete pain in Risa's side, calls her with a demand that she investigate a murder. This isn't the first time that Hunter has pulled Risa into an investigation, but there's a whole lot more at stake this time around as the deceased was Hunter's lover. To say Hunter is seething would be an understatement. Risa will have to tread very carefully, as Hunter isn't someone to be trifled with. The clock is ticking and Risa must find the killer fast, or even her loyal reaper protector, Azriel may not be enough to protect her from Hunter's wrath.

I have been waiting for what seems like an eternity for the sexual tension between Risa and Azriel to explode and finally turn into more than just a possibility  I had thought that once they gave into the fierce attraction between them, they would finally realize that they need one another, and would work to find a way to overcome their massive obstacles to be together. Considering just how many of Keri's books I have read, I honestly don't know what I was thinking as things are never that easy. Sure there are some really hot and steamy moments between the two of them, but things aren't all roses for them. It's obvious that their connection is much deeper than just the physical aspect, yet for some reason they can't seem to get out of their own way long enough to open up to the other. Risa is so fixated on the fact that Azriel originally only stayed with her because of the quest for the keys. Yet it's incredibly obvious that there is so much more going on now. Yet Risa keeps expecting him to act like a normal man, when he isn't even technically a man, but a mostly energy being. That being said, Azriel gets in their way just as much as he continually refuses to open up to her and just give her the truth in words that she so desperately needs. Considering the ending events, I'm not sure whether I'm actually more or less hopeful for the two of them at this point, but only time will tell.

I really love how these books are so intertwined with one another. I mean each installment has its own focus or obstacle to overcome, but the overall issue with the keys is also weaved thoroughly into the story even when it is not the main focus. I think these multiple threads/focuses really help to keep the tension and reader interest really high. That being said, all those threads make reviewing without spoiling a rather difficult thing as I can't really talk about them, but oh how I want to. But suffice it to say that DARKNESS UNMASKED is awesome, and you should definitely read it to find out all the juicy revelations for yourself.

There was so much going on in DARKNESS UNMASKED, it was literally an insane ride from the start to finish. I'm still trying to wrap my head around everything that happened, and what it means for the future. With the way things are, it's hard to imagine that there are only two books left in this series, as I can't imagine how things could possibly be wrapped up in that short of a time. A lot of series start to go stale after multiple installments, but that just isn't the case here, and I wish this series would continue on much longer. But since it's not, I guess that just means the action will only get more intense, and you won't find any complaints here. In fact, I haven't read a Keri Arthur book yet that I haven't loved, and DARKNESS UNMASKED is no exception. I finished this book only wanting more, and while I feel like a broken record when it comes to Keri's books, I am absolutely desperate to get my hands on the next installment!

Fiery Edge of Steel by Jill Archer
Noon Onyx #2

Lucifer and his army triumphed at Armageddon, leaving humans and demons living in uncertain peace based on sacrifice and strict laws. It is up to those with mixed demon and human blood, the Host, to prevent society from falling into anarchy.

Noon Onyx is the first female Host in memory to wield the destructive waning magic that is used to maintain order among the demons. Her unique abilities, paired with a lack of control and reluctance to kill, have branded her as an outsider from her peers. Only her powerful lover, Ari Carmine, and a roguish and mysterious Angel, Rafe Sinclair, support her unconventional ways.

When Noon is shipped off to a remote outpost to investigate several unusual disappearances, a task which will most likely involve trying and killing the patron demon of that area, it seems Luck is not on her side. But when the outpost settlers claim that an ancient and evil foe has stepped out of legend to commit the crimes, Noon realizes that she could be facing something much worse than she ever imagined…

Goddess by Josephine Angelini
Starcrossed #3

After accidentally unleashing the gods from their captivity on Olympus, Helen must find a way to re-imprison them without starting a devastating war. But the gods are angry, and their thirst for blood already has a body count.

To make matters worse, the Oracle reveals that a diabolical Tyrant is lurking among them, which drives a wedge between the once-solid group of friends. As the gods use the Scions against one another, Lucas’s life hangs in the balance. Still unsure whether she loves him or Orion, Helen is forced to make a terrifying decision, for war is coming to her shores.

In Josephine Angelini’s compelling conclusion to the masterfully woven Starcrossed trilogy, a goddess must rise above it all to change a destiny that’s been written in the stars. With worlds built just as fast as they crumble, love and war collide in an all-out battle that will leave no question unanswered and no heart untouched.

Of Triton by Anna Banks
Of Poseidon #2
In this sequel to OF POSEIDON, Emma has just learned that her mother is a long-lost Poseidon princess, and now struggles with an identity crisis: As a Half-Breed, she’s a freak in the human world and an abomination in the Syrena realm below. Syrena law states that all Half- Breeds should be put to death.

As if that’s not bad enough, her mother’s reappearance among the Syrena turns the two kingdoms—Poseidon and Triton—against one another. Which leaves Emma with a decision to make: Should she comply with Galen’s request to keep herself safe and just hope for the best? Or should she risk it all and reveal herself—and her Gift—to save a people she’s never known?

Spirit by Brigid Kemmerer
Elemental #3

With power comes enemies. Lots of them.

Hunter Garrity just wants to be left alone. He’s learned the hard way that his unusual abilities come at a price. And he can’t seem to afford any allies.

He’s up to his neck in hostiles. His grandfather, spoiling for a fight. The Merrick brothers, who think he ratted them out. Calla, the scheming psycho who wants to use him as bait.

Then there’s Kate Sullivan, the new girl at school. She’s not hostile. She’s bold. Funny. Hot. But she’s got an agenda, too.

With supposedly secret powers rippling to the surface everywhere around him, Hunter knows something ugly is about to go down. But finding out what means he’ll have to find someone he can trust…

Tempest Reborn by Nicole Peeler

Luckily for Jane, those who've given up on Anyan do not include those closest to her. Defying The Powers That Be, Jane and Company form their own crack squad of misfits, in whose hands the fate of the world may well rest.

With a little help from her friends, the Universe, and lots of snacks, Jane embarks on her greatest adventure yet, confident that with great sacrifice comes great reward. The question is, who will be that sacrifice?

A Witch's Handbook of Kisses and Curses by Molly Harper
Half Moon Hollow #3

Nola Leary would have been content to stay in Kilcairy, Ireland, healing villagers at her family’s clinic with a mix of magic and modern medicine. But a series of ill-timed omens and a deathbed promise to her grandmother have sent her on a quest to Half-Moon Hollow, Kentucky, to secure her family’s magical potency for the next generation. Her supernatural task? To unearth four artifacts hidden by her grandfather before a rival magical family beats her to it.

Complication One: Her grandfather was Mr. Wainwright and the artifacts are lost somewhere in what is now Jane Jameson's book shop.

Complication Two: her new neighbor, Jed Trudeau, who keeps turning up half naked at the strangest times, a distraction Nola doesn't need. This is one of the toughest blogs I've ever done. And I've done a lot of them. (Smile) I pulled characters from all of my favorite books, television and movies. I know I'll forget a favorite, but here we go...

Source

1. Willow from "Buffy" is one of my all-time favorites. I know everyone loves Buffy, and I do as well. But I loved Willow, even when she was bad Willow. She actually became the inspiration for my first book "Charmed & Dangerous." I love that she was powerful, but also the voice of reason. And she could kick butt when necessary.

Source

2. The vampire Selene in the "Underworld" series. Does anyone look better in leather and vinyl than Kate Beckinsale? I think not. I like that she's tough as nails, and at the same time caring and sexy.

Source

3. My favorite zombie has to be Nicholas Hoult (R) in "Warm Bodies." Best romantic zombie movie ever.

4. Alexia Tarabotti from the Parasol Protectorate books is one of my favorite paranormal characters. I love the world Gail Carriger created in these books. Great series to listen to on audio.

5. Harry Potter. Do I really need to explain? I love the books. Love the movies. He's heroic, he makes mistakes and he has the best friends ever.

Thanks Candace! I LOVE Selene too! And Harry is pretty cool as well ;)

Reviews for the past week:

Spirit by Brigid Kemmerer (Early Review)
"I have to applaud Brigid Kemmerer for her ability to both impress and appall me at the same time due to her unconventional choices. She took some incredible risks in SPIRIT, and while I feel like my heart has been put in a blender under the puree setting, I think it will pay out in the end as no one can say that this is a cookie cutter book."

Gameboard of the Gods by Richelle Mead (Early Review)
"GAMEBOARD OF THE GODS really suffered from a severe lack of world building. There was just way too much going on with little or no explanation, which made things rather frustrating as it left me feeling rather confused and disjointed from the story."

Kirsten's Book of the Week:

Tales of Majipoor by Robert Silverberg (Review)
"For the most part these stories stand fairly well on their own, and are a nice cross-section of different time periods and people in Majipoor. "
