Early Review: Fury's Kiss by Karen Chance

Fury's Kiss by Karen Chance
Dorina Basarab #3

Dorina Basarab is a dhampir—half-human, half-vampire. Subject to uncontrollable rages, most dhampirs live very short, very violent lives. But so far, Dory has managed to maintain her sanity by unleashing her anger on those demons and vampires who deserve killing...

Dory is used to fighting hard and nasty. So when she wakes up in a strange scientific lab with a strange man standing over her, her first instinct is to take his head off. Luckily, the man is actually the master vampire Louis-Cesare, so he’s not an easy kill.

It turns out that Dory had been working with a Vampire Senate task force on the smuggling of magical items and weaponry out of Faerie when she was captured and brought to the lab. But when Louis-Cesare rescues her, she has no memory of what happened to her.

To find out what was done to her—and who is behind it—Dory will have to face off with fallen angels, the maddest of mad scientists, and a new breed of vampires that are far worse than undead…
Being a dhampir, half-human, half-vampire, Dorina Basarab has lived a very long and rough life. Hated by vampires due to her uncontrollable and deadly rages, it's a miracle she wasn't killed long ago. Even so, she had finally started to gain some control over those periods of rage, but her latest case working for the very creatures that despise her must have tipped the scales. She wakes in a unknown lab with the rage consuming her, almost costing Louis-Cesare his life. After calming her down, the Vampire Senate realized that the answers they so desperately need are hidden behind that rage fog, and they would do anything to get them, for it could mean the difference between victory or defeat in the war.

Prior to reading Fury's Kiss, out of Karen Chance's two series set in this world, my favorites were definitely Cassie's books. However, now that I have finished Fury's Kiss, I have to say that the scales have tipped in Dory's favor. Granted I realize some of that is probably due to the fact that Dory is fresh in my mind while the last Cassie book was released over a year ago, but there is more to it than that. Dory has grown so much from the angry and bitter woman we first met. She's still rather wary of  most of the vampires (completely understandable due to her terrible history with them), but she also has made great strides in learning to work with them. Between her father, Radu, Louis-Cesare, and even Ray, she makes great inroads in this book towards opening herself up. Now, instead of blind mistrust standing in her way, it is more her own insecurities that seem to be her biggest road block. Of course, when you have been treated a vile thing your entire life, and are terrified of yourself because you hurt others in uncontrollable rages, it would be rather hard to have a good sense of self worth. That being said, Dory seemed to slowly be opening up to the idea of accepting and hopefully embracing both sides of herself, which will go a long way in overcoming those insecurities.

Another thing that makes this series so great is the dance of a romance between Dory and Louis-Cesare. Perhaps a more apt description would be a game of cat and mouse now that Louis-Cesare has made it rather apparent where he stands on the issue. Dory, isn't so certain, but a lot of that is due to insecurities, which like I mentioned previously, she has made great strides in that area. I really enjoyed the steamy moments between them, even as the sexual tension was ratcheted up several knots leaving me more than a little frustrated at times as I just wanted them to finally get their groove on. That being said, I really feel like they have finally started to settle things and head in the right direction, making me one very happy camper.

I have to admit that I was a little intimidated by the size of this book as the ARC copy I read had 536 pages. Whenever a book goes over 400 pages (and sometimes even when the page count is less), there always is that concern that parts will drag as it hadn't been condensed down enough to its best form. That wasn't even a possibility of a concern for Fury's Kiss as it was non-stop from start to finish. Seriously, I cannot even begin to express how impressive it was to read a book of that length without having a single dull moment. Even if I wasn't already incredibly satisfied with all the other elements of the book, that feat alone would have earned it a high rating. So when you add in the yummy romance, the great character growth, and the heart pounding action, Fury's Kiss more than earns a resounding five star rating. Seriously, run, do not walk to your nearest book store and snatch this puppy up as it is an absolute must buy!

Kirsten Reviews: All Spell Breaks Loose by Lisa Shearin

All Spell Breaks Loose by Lisa Shearin
Raine Benares #6

My name is Raine Benares—and it sucks to be me. The Saghred, a soul-stealing stone that has given me unlimited power, has been stolen by a goblin prince, and with it went my magic. The Saghred is in the goblin capital of Regor, in the hands of Sarad Nukpana, who’s on the verge of becoming the most powerful mage ever...just as soon as I’m dead.

Because Sarad can’t use the stone while I’m alive. Incentive enough to plan a little trip to Regor with a small band of good friends, not-so-good friends, and outright enemies. All we need to do is destroy the Saghred, kill Sarad, and put a renegade prince on the throne. Did I mention I’ll be doing this without magic?

Raine Benares, the heroine of Lisa Shearin's 'All Spell Breaks Loose' is having a tough time of it. First she found a soul-stealing stone called the Saghred, which on the upside, gave her unlimited power. The problem is, she never wanted it. For most people, losing something that you didn't want in the first place wouldn't be so bad, but when a goblin dark mage is the new owner of such power, things are probably not going to be all that pleasant. Especially when that mage has the predictable goals of wanting to kill Raine, and conquer the world.

So, there's nothing else for Raine to do but pack up and head to the goblin capital with some friends, and maybe somebody who falls into the category of 'enemy.' But, a woman does what she has to when there's so much to lose.

The catch is that in order to accomplish her admittedly lofty goals of killing the mage, destroying the Saghred, and installing a goblin prince on the throne, Raine has to find a way to do that without any magic.

Now here's where it gets a little tricky.

The sixth book in this popular series is, like all the others in that its heroine protects her friends, gets into trouble, or it has a way of finding her, and the action never lets up.

In fine form, Shearin allows each character has their own moment to shine, and without spoiling any of the plot, readers will be engaged and worried for the well-being of Raine, Valerius, Talon, Piaris, Tam, and Mychael as the stakes get higher and they are put at a huge disadvantage.

This book brings the series to a strong conclusion, and any lingering questions or threads from the rest of the series are handled well and it's safe to say that readers will be pleased with the end of this story, even if they will miss the adventures of Raine and her friends.

Early Review: Covet by Melissa Darnell

Covet by Melissa Darnell
The Clann #2

Dangerous to be together. Painful to be apart.

Savannah Colbert knows she broke up with Tristan Coleman for the right reasons. Most of all, to keep from killing him with her new vampire abilities. But try telling her heart. Now, lost in a sea of hostile Clann faces, Sav tries to come to terms with what she's becoming and what that means for her future. And that someone is doing their best to bully her into making a terrible mistake.

Tristan can't believe Sav won't even talk to him. If being apart is her decision, fine. Just don't expect him to honor it. But even as he prepares to fight for the girl he loves, forces beyond their control take them both in directions neither could have foreseen or prepared for.

A reckoning is coming… and not everyone will survive.

To avoid a war between the Vampires and the Clann, Savannah broke things off with Tristan. Being separated from is the worst kind of torture, especially as she cannot seem to escape his constant presence and reminder of what she cannot have. Things are any easier outside of her romantic life either as she struggles with the complications of her vampiric side taking over, and the Clann's determination to ruin her life. Meanwhile, Tristan is bound and determined to change Savannah's mind even if it means giving up everything and everyone else. But even as he struggles to find a solution, outside forces push them further apart leading to an inevitable confrontation that will forever change their lives.

I have to admit I was worried that this book would center around a whole lot of teen angst due to the forced separation between Savannah and Tristan. Granted there is a whole lot of pining for one another, but it never tips over into that annoying state that can happen with teenagers. Well, at least on Savannah's part that is, since she was able to stand strong and steady throughout for the most part. Tristan on the other hand was another story as I wanted to smack him upside the head at times for his behavior as he lashed out in anger, but it didn't take very long to forgive him as his pain was so heart wrenching. This truly is a case of starcrossed lovers that are written incredibly well, especially as the emotions between them were so real that I couldn't help being sucked right into their pain.

At first I felt like this book was a little slow, but then I realized that there actually was a good bit happening as it built a steady pace. It's just that I was so focused on the emotional aspects of the story, (and yes I was rather impatient to see if there would be any hope for the two of them together), that I almost overlooked all of the other developments. Regardless of that, I have to say that any possible lack of intensity in the first part of the book was more than compensated for in the last third. It was almost as if a switch was pulled and the action events completely took over, spiraling closer to the ending which knocked my legs right out from under me. There was a short teaser for the next book included in my ARC copy that I read to try and alleviate some of my misery from the ending, but it only made it worse. I can assure you that the wait for the final book will be agonizing.

In all honesty, I was completely blown away by Covet. Yes, I enjoyed the first installment, but I don't remember it having quite the same effect on me. The sheer depth of the raw emotion in Covet was absolutely staggering as I felt like I was being torn apart right along with the characters. This was an absolutely brilliant follow up to Crave, and I highly recommend it.

Early Review: Boyfriend From Hell by Jamie Quaid

, by KT

Boyfriend From Hell by Jamie Quaid
Saturn's Daughter #1

They say justice is blind. But Justine isn’t. Justine (Tina) Clancy is just an ordinary law student with a faulty arrest record, a part-time job in Baltimore’s radioactive Zone, and a family secret so bizarre even she doesn’t believe it. That is, until in a fit of fury she damns her boyfriend to hell—and it’s exactly where he ends up.

Much to her surprise, Tina is apparently one of Saturn’s daughters, with the power to wield vigilante justice. But poor Max didn’t deserve to go up in flames, even if he did almost run her over with her own car. Tina’s convinced someone cut the brakes—and now a relentless nemesis is stalking her through the Zone’s back alleys, where buildings glow, statues move, and chemical waste exposure comes with interesting consequences. Tina’s usually a loner, but now she needs a posse like no other: a shape-shifting kitten, an invisible thief, a biker gang, a snake-charming private detective, a well-meaning cop, and her sleazy, sexy boss. But in between freeing Max from hell, saving her own neck, and solving a mystery that threatens the Zone and her newfound friends, how is she ever going to study for finals?

Tina always thought she was just an ordinary law student trying to scrape by working part-time in the chemical spill Zone. But all that changes when her temper gets the best of her and she winds up accidentally sending her boyfriend straight to hell. Literally. With that one single event her life has been turned completely upside down as she goes from zero to sixty and finds she is one of Saturn's daughters and has the ability to wield justice directly. Unfortunately her new found power comes with a price as she has attracted the wrong people, and they won't stop until she is dead.

As interesting as the elements of the books were, I could help but feel a little disjointed from it all. It was almost like there were two different mythologies going on at the same time that were not blended well enough. On one hand you have the Zone, and all the mysterious happenings surrounding it. Then on the other you have Tina's heritage from Saturn, which I'll get into in a little while. Either one would have made for a really interesting backdrop, but when combined, I wasn't really sure what they had to do with one another, especially since Tina's abilities had nothing to do with the effects of the Zone. The only real tie shown was that those who were "different" seemed to be drawn to the Zone, explaining the reasoning for Tina to have ended up there. Perhaps I'm just being overly picky, but I felt like neither side was developed enough. I mean the Zone just didn't seem really believable as if something like that would have happened, then the government would have completely locked down the area. They would have evacuated all the people or at the very least quarantined them. I get that the people in the Zone were trying to avoid outsider notice for that exact reason, but it still wasn't really believable for them to have been left the their own devices in the first place.

Tina is an interesting character to say the least. She is very hot headed, and has a tendency to go off half cocked. Granted this does make her rather unpredictable, which sometimes can be an advantage, but in all honesty, I felt she more leaned towards the liability side. She also had this bad habit of refusing help just to be stubborn. There were several times throughout the book that I wanted to reach through my kindle and strangle her. I'm sure over time she will learn to control herself, but I couldn't help feeling that for now, her power set was wasted on her since she kept using it in not so great ways due to her short fuse. Speaking of those powers, that was a source of frustration for me, as again, like the Zone, that story thread just didn't seem to be fully developed. There was no clear answers for a very long time as to what/who she really was, and even by the very end, I'm still not quite sure of her abilities and limitations. Hopefully there will be a whole lot more answers in the next installment.

Even though Boyfriend From Hell had some problematic issues for me, it was still a pretty enjoyable read once you suspended a little disbelief and be willing to just go with the flow. In fact, I was never so off put that I had to walk away, and everything flowed well, making it a fun read overall. I do feel like there is a lot of potential in this series, and I am looking forward to the next installment.

And by the time she realizes that Gabriel may be right, it could be too late to bring him back to her side.

Incarnation by Emma Cornwall

In the steampunk world of Victorian London, a beautiful vampire seeks out the author of Dracula–to set the record straight . . . If one is to believe Bram Stoker’s legendary vampire tale, Lucy Weston is Dracula’s most wanton creation, a sexual creature of the night who preys on innocent boys. But the real-life Lucy is nothing like her fictional counterpart—and she demands to know why the Victorian author deliberately lied. With Stoker’s reluctant help, she’s determined to track down the very fiend who transformed her—from the sensual underworld where humans vie to become vampires, to a hidden cell beneath a temple to madness, and finally into the glittering Crystal Palace where death reigns supreme.

Haunted by fragmentary memories of her lost life and love, Lucy must battle her thirst for blood as she struggles to stop a catastrophic war that will doom vampires and humans alike. Ultimately, she must make a choice that illuminates for her—and for us—what it means to be human.

Mark of the Witch by Maggie Shayne
The Portal #1

From New York Times bestselling author Maggie Shayne comes the first novel in her thrilling new trilogy, THE PORTAL She was born to save what he is sworn to destroy...

A lapsed Wiccan, Indira Simon doesn't believe in magic anymore. But when strange dreams of being sacrificed to an ancient Babylonian god have her waking up with real rope burns on her wrists, she's forced to acknowledge that she may have been too hasty in her rejection of the unknown. Then she meets mysterious and handsome Father Tomas. Emerging from the secrecy of an obscure Gnostic sect, he arrives with stories of a demon, a trio of warrior witches-and Indira's sacred calling. Yet there's something even Tomas doesn't know, an inescapable truth that will force him to choose between saving the life of the woman he's come to love-and saving the world.

The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater
Raven Cycle #1

“There are only two reasons a non-seer would see a spirit on St. Mark’s Eve,” Neeve said. “Either you’re his true love . . . or you killed him.”

It is freezing in the churchyard, even before the dead arrive.

Every year, Blue Sargent stands next to her clairvoyant mother as the soon-to-be dead walk past. Blue herself never sees them—not until this year, when a boy emerges from the dark and speaks directly to her.

His name is Gansey, and Blue soon discovers that he is a rich student at Aglionby, the local private school. Blue has a policy of staying away from Aglionby boys. Known as Raven Boys, they can only mean trouble.

But Blue is drawn to Gansey, in a way she can’t entirely explain. He has it all—family money, good looks, devoted friends—but he’s looking for much more than that. He is on a quest that has encompassed three other Raven Boys: Adam, the scholarship student who resents all the privilege around him; Ronan, the fierce soul who ranges from anger to despair; and Noah, the taciturn watcher of the four, who notices many things but says very little.

For as long as she can remember, Blue has been warned that she will cause her true love to die. She never thought this would be a problem. But now, as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she’s not so sure anymore.

From Maggie Stiefvater, the bestselling and acclaimed author of the Shiver trilogy and The Scorpio Races, comes a spellbinding new series where the inevitability of death and the nature of love lead us to a place we’ve never been before.

Stormdancer by Jay Krsitoff
The Lotus War #1

A DYING LAND
The Shima Imperium verges on the brink of environmental collapse; an island nation once rich in tradition and myth, now decimated by clockwork industrialization and the machine-worshipers of the Lotus Guild. The skies are red as blood, the land is choked with toxic pollution, and the great spirit animals that once roamed its wilds have departed forever.

AN IMPOSSIBLE QUEST
The hunters of Shima’s imperial court are charged by their Shōgun to capture a thunder tiger—a legendary creature, half-eagle, half-tiger. But any fool knows the beasts have been extinct for more than a century, and the price of failing the Shōgun is death.

A SIXTEEN YEAR OLD GIRL
Yukiko is a child of the Fox clan, possessed of a talent that if discovered, would see her executed by the Lotus Guild. Accompanying her father on the Shōgun’s hunt, she finds herself stranded: a young woman alone in Shima’s last wilderness, with only a furious, crippled thunder tiger for company. Even though she can hear his thoughts, even though she saved his life, all she knows for certain is he’d rather see her dead than help her.

But together, the pair will form an indomitable friendship, and rise to challenge the might of an empire.

What's Left of Me by Kat Zhang
The Hybrid Chronicles #1

Eva and Addie started out the same way as everyone else—two souls woven together in one body, taking turns controlling their movements as they learned how to walk, how to sing, how to dance. But as they grew, so did the worried whispers. Why aren’t they settling? Why isn’t one of them fading? The doctors ran tests, the neighbors shied away, and their parents begged for more time. Finally Addie was pronounced healthy and Eva was declared gone. Except, she wasn’t…

For the past three years, Eva has clung to the remnants of her life. Only Addie knows she’s still there, trapped inside their body. Then one day, they discover there may be a way for Eva to move again. Book Blogger Confessions (9)

This meme is hosted by Tiger from Tiger's All Consuming Books and Karen from For What It's Worth on the first and third Monday of each month.

This week's question:

Blogger relationships: Are there blogs you visit and comment on because you like their style, voice etc.(maybe you even converse with the blogger on Twitter & Facebook) but those comments are never reciprocated on your blog?. Do you get a bit offended or do you understand that they may be busy? Or do you comment just because you like a post not expecting anything in return?

I have to be honest that I'm a REALLY bad non-commenter myself. I have a handful of blogs that I love and regularly stalk, but I still don't comment all that often. I just never seem to have anything meaningful to say, so I just keep quiet. I realize everyone loves comments, myself included, but it just isn't one of my strengths. I've tried so many times in the past to get better at commenting, but I haven't had much success. However, I do try and make the best effort to respond to comments on my blog unless they are overly generic, but even sometimes I get really behind on that as well. So, no I don't get offended at all when a comment isn't reciprocated. That would be a little too much of the Pot and Kettle issue for me.

Reviews for the past week:

Hanging by a Thread by Sophie Jordan (Release Day Review)
How to Marry a Warlock in 10 Days by Saranna DeWylde (Early Review)
Mark of the Witch by Maggie Shayne (Early Review)

Hanging by a Thread was a disappointment for me. Perhaps my expectations were just too high since Sophie's Aftertime series blew me away, but this one just didn't do it for me at all.

I'm so in love with the quirky funny nature of the 10 Days books. I loved this one just like the first one, and I can't wait to get my hands on the next installment.

Mark of the Witch was a really good opener to Maggie new series. It is already shaping to become one of me favorite Paranormal Romance Series.
