The Indigo Spell by Richelle Mead
Bloodlines #3

In the aftermath of a forbidden moment that rocked Sydney to her core, she finds herself struggling to draw the line between her Alchemist teachings and what her heart is urging her to do. Then she meets alluring, rebellious Marcus Finch--a former Alchemist who escaped against all odds, and is now on the run. Marcus wants to teach Sydney the secrets he claims the Alchemists are hiding from her. But as he pushes her to rebel against the people who raised her, Sydney finds that breaking free is harder than she thought. There is an old and mysterious magic rooted deeply within her. And as she searches for an evil magic user targeting powerful young witches, she realizes that her only hope is to embrace her magical blood--or else she might be next.

Populated with new faces as well as familiar ones, the Bloodlines series explores all the friendship, romance, battles, and betrayals that made the #1 New York Times bestselling Vampire Academy series so addictive—this time in a part-vampire, part-human setting where the stakes are even higher and everyone’s out for blood
.

With each day that passes since Adrian made his feelings for her known, Sydney finds herself having a harder time staying away from him. Even as she tells herself he's just her friend and there is nothing more there, she's only lying to herself. But relationship woes are the least of her problems once she meets Marcus Finch. He claims to have information about the Alchemists that will forever change everything she has ever believed and wants her to join him. Meanwhile her professor is still pushing magic on her, but this time she may not have a choice as the decision to not accept her own magic could cost her life.

Whenever I think back to the Sydney we first met back in book four of the Vampire Academy series, I am absolutely amazed at how far she has come. It's almost as if I'm looking at two very different people. Granted we did originally see her through Rose's eyes, so we didn't get to see that hidden fire inside of Sydney. However, even at the start of the Bloodlines series, Sydney is very subdued and very anti-magic and all things vampires. In fact, whenever anyone used magic around her she would literally go into a panic. So to now see her willingly casting magic on her own and entertaining thoughts about a vampire is nothing short of miraculous in my opinion. I think that once she fully accepts her abilities and who she really is, she will be a force to reckoned with. Look out Alchemists! That being said, even with all of the growth she has shown, she hasn't lost what drew me to her in the first place. She is just so level-headed and the one that always seems to know how to handle a situation. She really is the glue that holds their rag-tag team together, and they have all come to depend on her. It's a heavy burden, but she carries it admirably.

There is just something so compelling about the dynamic between Adrian and Sydney, which was only ramped up in THE INDIGO SPELL. In fact, I think their relationship, believe it or not, is actually even more impactful than Rose and Dmitri in the Vampire Academy Series. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely adore them as a couple, but I just think Sydney and Adrian have something more. What that "more" is, I'm not entirely sure, but I just think there is something so right about the two of them even if the rest of the world sees it as wrong. There's an honesty too them that is just rare. There are no games, no pretensions, they are just what they are to one another, even if Sydney fights it tooth and nail the entire way. Not that I have a problem with her fighting it since that is very much in her character and her giving in easily would have really lessened what they share. And yes I do realize I sound like a major fan girl crushing over the two of them, but I fully own up to it. I just love their dynamic too much to be ashamed.

When I first rediscovered my love for reading, I would gladly devour multiple books in a series. However, now that I've been back in the wonderful world of books for over three years, there just aren't that many well established series left to read in my preferred genres. In fact while I am always very excited to read a book in a new series be they by a debut author, or one of my long time favorites, I have been shying away from reading the sequel. The wait between books is really agonizing, and I've found that the second book in a series typically ends on a doozy of cliffhanger. This especially holds true in trilogies. Oh, I still buy the book, but it sits pretty and unread on my shelf until I am ready for it. Even though the Bloodlines series isn't a trilogy, I still held off reading THE GOLDEN LILY as I knew I would be miserable with my wait for THE INDIGO SPELL. I was completely happy to sit in "ignorance" while everyone else suffered from the wait. However, when I was offered the opportunity to receive an early copy of THE INDIGO SPELL, my will power to hold off crumpled. It only took me a single setting to devour THE GOLDEN LILY, but I was still hesitant to read THE INDIGO SPELL as the third book in Richelle Mead's series usually make me feel the need for antidepressants since she is rather cruel with the ending of those third books. But, I bravely mustered through and enjoyed every single moment of the book. While the ending of THE INDIGO SPELL did not leave me devastated like I was expecting, it still ended on a pretty big shake up that has left me incredibly desperate for the next book. I cannot wait to see what happens next! THE INDIGO SPELL is an absolute treat that is not to be missed!
