Monday Wrapup (174)

, by KT

It's Monday! What Are You Reading, hosted by Book Journey, is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week. It is a great way to network with other bloggers, see some wonderful blogs, and put new titles on your reading list.

Reviews for the past week:

Flamebound by Tessa Adams (Review)
"FLAMEBOUND was an absolute roller coaster of emotions and action. It was incredibly intense, and it's honestly a wonder that I have fingernails left. The highs, although far and few between as this was a pretty dark book, left me soaring, while that darkness I spoke of was devastating."

Sins of the Lost by Linda Poitevin (Mini Review)
"I won't be giving this one a rating as I think my own mood and my skimming could quite possibly give an unfairly low rating. Based on other ratings I've looked at, it looks like this book has largely been enjoyed, so I'd have to say that if you are a fan of the series, then it's definitely worth checking out, and don't let my difficulties scare you off. "

Kirsten's Book of the Week:

Chasers by James Phelan (Review)
"The story feels very slow paced, and at times drags on. Since this is the first book in the series, it works at setting the stage for more action, and hopefully the sequel provides that in excess. Chasers offers a post-apocalyptic world where isolation is the norm and the cost of survival is weighed against a need for companionship."

Some Like it Sinful by Robbie Terman
Perfect Recipe #2

Their attraction is sinfully delicious…

A struggling business and one act of vandalism may have brought them together, but bakery owner Chloe Nelson and professional hockey player Griffin Lange get along like chocolate and pickles. Chloe needs the famous (and famously unattached) Griffin to attract people to her pastries, and Griffin needs the curvaceous and fiery Chloe to keep him out of trouble. A fake relationship to keep the media interested seems like the perfect plan.

But when temptation throws them into bed together, a new plan arises. Why not make the fake real? Griffin’s winning every home game, and Chloe’s business has never been better. Both know it’s only physical—and only temporary. But can they drop their defenses for love, even if it means getting a little bit sinful?

Wild Card by Jamie Wyman

It was bad enough that gods gambled with human souls, but Catherine Sharp’s soul just had to be won by the Greek goddess of Discord, Eris. As if working a dead-end tech support job didn’t suck the life out of her as it was. Now, Cat finds herself performing random tasks for the goddess in her free time.

But when Coyote, the Native American trickster himself, claims to have won her own soul in Mayhem's weekly poker game, Cat wants in on the action. With five sneaky gods upping the ante, Cat needs to find a way to collect the winning chips that could save her soul.

Marius, a handsome yet irritating satyr with his own debt to Eris, might finally come in handy for something. If they play their cards right and work together, Cat and Marius may just get their freedom back. If they don't kill each other or fall in love first.

Mini Review: Sins of the Lost by Linda Poitevin

Sins of the Lost by Linda Poitevin
Grigori Legacy #3

From the author of Sins of the Angels and Sins of the Son comes the newest novel in the “electric, thrilling and extremely intelligent” (Ex Libris) Grigori Legacy series.

Heaven and Hell are on the brink of war as Lucifer builds his Nephilim army and waits for his new agenda to become a reality — that of having a Nephilimchild of his own bloodline to lead his forces to cataclysmic victory.

With rumors of the pending war rampant on Earth, Alex fights to save humanity from its own panic – leaving little time for her fledgling relationship with Seth, the man with heavenly origins who has captured her heart. But when Nephilim children begin to disappear, along with Alex’s own vulnerable niece, the inevitable war between Heaven and Hell becomes as personal as sin.

Heaven has its own plans to fight the coming apocalypse, but first it needs Seth back. Asked to betray the man she loves, Alex must turn for help to the soulmate she thought she’d given up — the Archangel Aramael, who may be her last chance to save her family and humanity from the ashes of Lucifer’s Armageddon.

This series had a pretty rocky start for me, but after my enjoyment of the second installment, I did have high hopes for this one, which unfortunately fell flat. Perhaps I just wasn't in the right mindset for this book, but I had a very hard time getting into it. It just was so incredibly dark, and while I remember the previous two books being dark, I just don't think they were as bad as this one in that aspect. Perhaps they were, but it just didn't seem to affect me as much. And typically darkness works okay in books for me, but I'll admit that it was really hard for me to muster through this book. In fact I actually wound up skimming off and on hoping for some sort of turn around or hope or anything, but it only got darker as the book went on.

From what I understand, there's only one more book left in the series, and I'm torn as to whether I will be continuing on. On one hand I want to see things through, especially after the ending of this book that made me wish I had of given up reading the book when it first started to not work so well for me. At least then I would have been spared that blow and heartache. But on the other hand, I'm just not sure my curiosity is quite strong enough to stand up to such darkness.

I won't be giving this one a rating as I think my own mood and my skimming could quite possibly give an unfairly low rating. Based on other ratings I've looked at, it looks like this book has largely been enjoyed, so I'd have to say that if you are a fan of the series, then it's definitely worth checking out, and don't let my difficulties scare you off.

Kirsten Reviews: Chasers by James Phelan

Chasers by James Phelan
Alone #1

Four Teenagers. One Destroyed City.Thousands of Infected Predators.

Jesse is on a UN Youth Ambassadors camp in New York when his subway carriage is rocked by an explosion. Jesse and his three friends, Dave, Mini and Anna, crawl out from the wreckage to discover a city in chaos.

Streets are deserted. Buildings are in ruins. Worse, the only other survivors seem to be infected with a virus that turns them into horrifying predators...

Outnumbered. No sign of life. Just them. And you... ALONE.

Chasers, the first book in the Alone series by James Phelan is a story of the world being shocked askew. From the first page, the protagonist Jesse is out of place. He’s originally from Australia, but has moved to Manhattan and is on a field trip with other students when things change with a literal ball of fire. They get out of the subway to find that New York has been destroyed, and even worse, they’re on their own and afraid.

What follows is a story of the teenagers trying to figure out what’s happened, while at the same time trying to avoid anyone they encounter who has been infected with something strange that makes them something not a vampire and not quite a zombie. Essentially, Phelan combines aspects of both, and the resulting creatures are what most of the other survivors have turned into.

By setting the book in such a large city, the fact that there aren’t many people left alive becomes even more sharply realized, and on that count, Phelan does a good job. Stylistically, the lack of quotation marks when people talk in the present are a little jarring, and it can make the text seem to run together without much clarification as to who is talking, or when.

The story makes use of the effects that isolation can have on people, and as time goes on, how that informs their actions. There are some recordings and other mementos left behind by other people that the kids find as they explore the city, and in not finding these people, there is no question about what’s happened to them. One girl says it best when she confesses that she’s tired of being alone and doesn’t know who she is anymore. When compared to that, risking everything among the infected seems to her the better choice.

But, in spite of all these elements, the story feels very slow paced, and at times drags on. Since this is the first book in the series, it works at setting the stage for more action, and hopefully the sequel provides that in excess. Chasers offers a post-apocalyptic world where isolation is the norm and the cost of survival is weighed against a need for companionship.

Early Review: Flamebound by Tessa Adams

Flamebound by Tessa Adams
Lone Star Witch #2

After Xandra’s nasty run in with the Arcadian Council of Witches—where she was almost killed and her boyfriend, Declan, was almost framed for it—her plan is to lay low and figure out why its members would torment the people they are supposed to protect. Declan, temperamental and protective warlock that he is, doesn’t feel so reticent. And when violence erupts again, there’s no stopping him from pursuing revenge…

When a council member is murdered in a fashion that screams dark magic, Declan claims someone else beat him to it. Xandra doesn’t want to believe he could commit such a brutal act, but she knows he has a dark side—one that his former love interest Tsura understands better than she ever will. With Tsura back in town, Xandra doesn’t know whom to trust. And a killer targeting witches and wizards is still at large…

One of the best things about this series is that the characters are seriously flawed, but endearing all the same. As much as I like Xandra, she still is pretty childish in her behavior, and honestly her characters seems much younger at times than the twenty-seven she is supposed to be. She's just a bit petulant and bucks all authority even when they are trying to help her just for sheer stubbornness it seems. However that same stubbornness does endear me to her a bit because in the same token, she doesn't allow anyone to steamroll her. Her power is a pretty hefty one, and she's had to deal with an incredible amount in a very short time, and is still trying to find her way. By not backing down, she isn't allowing a bad precedent to be set of keeping her out of things for her own good, which I do understand. I just think she needs to gain a bit more maturity and reasoning skills in her arguments. Declan's flaws on the other hand are not so obvious. So much of him remains a mystery, and while you can see the damage, it isn't so apparent with him. I'm really looking forward to seeing Xandra continue to crack his shell. As I'll admit at first all the mystery surrounding him was enticing, I'm more than eager to peel back the layers to get to the man beneath.

I had a bit of a hard time connecting to Xandra and Declan as a couple in the previous book, and while things started to get better in FLAMEBOUND, there is still a bit of a disconnect. Things have been just so incredibly rushed, and with all the obstacles and secrets in their path, I'm having a bit of trouble catching up. It's almost like they went from zero to one thousand in a matter of days. Sure there's the magical connection between them since they are Soulbound, and I'm a sucker for that kind of tie, but that kind of need they showed/talked about seemed just a bit off to me. As I said Xandra acts rather childish, and Declan is so closed off most the time, and seems to only express his care for her in his obsessiveness and anger at not being able to protect her from everything. Sure, it's obvious that he does care for Xandra, especially when he is ripped apart inside each time she gets hurt, but he's a bit too secretive with her for my tastes. He's also too quick to hide things from Xandra and makes decisions for her despite her protests. Don't get me wrong, I do feel something for them as a couple, I mean how could I not when you consider all their VERY steamy interludes, I think they have a lot more work to do before it's as strong as it should be outside of the bedroom.

FLAMEBOUND was an absolute roller coaster of emotions and action. It was incredibly intense, and it's honestly a wonder that I have fingernails left. The highs, although far and few between as this was a pretty dark book, left me soaring, while that darkness I spoke of was devastating. I'm incredibly impressed at Tessa Adam's ability to seamlessly create such a wide range. And the way it ended? Oh my goodness! I had predicted who the culprit was this time around, but that didn't soften the blow one bit. Even worse is that there's a pretty big cliffhanger, but despite my searching high and low, I cannot find anything about another installment coming. And it would be really unfortunate if there were none in the works as I really want to know what happens next. But in the meantime, I highly recommend FLAMEBOUND as it is perfect for Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance fans alike and will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.

Excerpt

Then, I see the specific memory—the one that haunts me. It is the memory that consumes my being with longing because I have been unable to attach an emotion to it. I feel as if I am in that memory at this moment.

“I’m going to get you Emmalina,” my mother says. I run so fast that my tiny heart is thumping rapidly. Sticky sweat surrounds my face and mats my hair at my hairline. My feet are bare and the gray haze is the lightest I ever remember it being. I look over my shoulder and laugh as I see her running after me. She has her hands stretched out toward me and her brown hair bounces as she runs. It is a dream in slow motion that I get to relive. The moment is perfect. Her smile is electric. Her voice is sweeter than any treat from the old world.

“You can’t catch me, Mommy!” My singsong child’s voice rings back at her. I want her to catch me. I want her hands tickling me. She grabs me and lifts me under my arms, and up over her head. I can touch the sky. I am flying. She spins around in a circle but I do not look around. I look at her smiling face. It is so cheerful, it is so perfect. It holds the same emotion that I feel in this moment.

We are complete. I am not empty.

The emotion rips me from the inside. “I feel joy,” I tell Finn as I throw my head back laughing at the sky. The emotion tears through me more powerful than anything else, filling me with purpose. I am elated, delighted, I feel contentment and relief. Excitement courses through my veins more powerful than dark magic. It is incomparable. I splash the water at my sides and giggle because I want to, not because I think it prudent. I am so happy I remember her—thankful Finn has forced this from me in his own way. I jump toward him and he catches me under my arms. He lifts me above his head and I feel like I am floating on a cloud in an alternate universe. He spins in one slow circle. I gaze down at him knowing this is what my mother wants for me. I vow to make her sacrifice worth it.

Finn laughs loudly—a hearty, meaningful laugh. We revel in this perfect moment together just Finn and I and our joyful laughter.

I know then that his laugh is the only sound I like more than my own heartbeat.

Reviews for the past week:

Pawn by Aimee Carter (Review)
"PAWN has to be one of the best books that I have ever read when it comes to twists and turns. Sure, there were flaws, namely in the romance department, which I hope gets beefed up a great deal in the next book, but as far as the twists, they were perfect. I honestly never knew what was coming next, and it kept me on the very edge of my seat."

Pushed by Corrine Jackson (Early Review)
"I enjoyed Touched even though it left me with a few frustrations, but PUSHED really took everything a step further, and really cemented my love for this series. In fact, the final installment is easily on my most anticipated list for next year, that's how excited I am for it."

Kirsten's Book of the Week:

Hellfire by Jean Johnson (Review)
"It’s worth noting that this is the middle book in the series. What that means is that there are a few issues that usually go along with a middle book in a series, and this one is no exception."

Sense Theives #2

She didn’t know how far she’d go—until she was pushed.

Remy O’Malley was just learning to harness her uncanny healing power when she discovered the other, darker half of her bloodline. Now she lives trapped between two worlds, uneasy among her fellow Healers—and relentlessly hunted by the Protectors.

Forced to conceal her dual identity, and the presence of her Protector boyfriend Asher Blackwell, Remy encounters a shadow community of Healers who will put her loyalties to the test.

Pushed to the limit, with the lives of those she loves most on the line, Remy must decide whether to choose sides in a centuries-old war—or make the ultimate sacrifice and go to a place from which she may never return…

I'm honestly at a loss where to begin with this review. The entire book is one giant spoiler in my opinion from the point where she travels to the Healer community on. I mean just the fact that Asher followed her there, should be warning enough, but let me just say it, this book is utterly heart breaking. And while I saw one of the twists coming, there were so many more that completely derailed me. These types of books are so incredibly hard for me to review as there are so many things I would love to talk about, one HUGE thing in my opinion that irrevocably changed a dynamic between the characters. Actually, this one twist is so huge at least to me that I'm going to break one of my rules and have a spoiler section below.

While the world behind this series is really interesting, especially now that more of the secrets behind the Healers have been revealed, it is honestly the characters that steal the show. Remy is so strong and has grown so much. Sure, she's still pretty niave, and quick to jump into the fray without thinking things through first, but honestly that's one of the things I love about her. While the others would prefer her to hold herself back, when someone is injured, she can't help but step up to help them, even though it costs her greatly. When I think back to everything she has endured in her life, it is utterly amazing to me that she hasn't snapped. Luckily now she has the support of her friends and family. From the fiercely protective Asher, to her sister, dad and step-mother, and even Asher's surly siblings, she has backup and the security she never had before. Sure things will never be easy for her because of what she is, but at least she's not alone anymore.

I enjoyed Touched even though it left me with a few frustrations, but PUSHED really took everything a step further, and really cemented my love for this series. In fact, the final installment is easily on my most anticipated list for next year, that's how excited I am for it. So, if you enjoyed Touched, then you will not want to miss this fantastic book as it is one heck of a roller coaster ride from start to finish!

So, even though this is a spoiler area, I'm still going to try and be as vague as I can about specifics as that would ruin the rest of the book. Wow, Remy and Gabe. Never in a million years would I have predicted their dynamic to change so drastically. Even more surprising is that I'm actually in favor of that change. Typically in any triangle situation, I pick a guy and stick with him. I don't change my mind. Yet this time around I find myself wanting to do just that, even if I know it's a long shot, and not where Remy's heart lies. There's just something about him, now that I know there is so much more than meets the eye. I honestly think he cares for her more than Asher ever could, which doesn't diminish Asher's feelings at all. I'm just saying that there is a maturity to Gabe that makes me think he just has a better handle on what he really wants. My heart broke so much for him having to watch Remy love Asher so much, all the while his own guilt at coveting his brother's girl ate at him. I am trying to hold out hope for things between them, but when you consider the way things ended in this book, and that there is only one more book left in the trilogy, it doesn't look good.

How about you? Do you often change your mind in love triangles, or does something big have to happen first? Or, do you never change no matter what?
