Early Review: Immortally Yours by Angie Fox

Immortally Yours by Angie Fox
Monster M*A*S*H #1

IN THE WAR BETWEEN THE GODS…
No one patches up the incoming wounded like Dr. Petra Robichaud. Recruited by the gods for her uncanny medical skills, she’s the best M*A*S*H surgeon in the army. Along with a nosy guard sphinx, vegetarian werewolf, and otherparanormal paramedics, she bandages soldiers who are built like Greek gods (literally). But when one sexy immortal ends up on her operating table—half dead and totally to-die-for—Petra’s afraid she’ll lose her patient and her heart…

NOTHING IS MORE DANGEROUS THAN LOVE
Commander Galen of Delphi is one gorgeous but stubborn demi-god. When his spirit tries to slip out of his fatally wounded body, Dr. Petra has to slip it back in—unwittingly revealing her ability to see ghosts. Now that Galen knows her secret, he’s convinced she’s part of an ancient prophecy. If the oracles are right, Petra could lead Galen’s army to peace. And if he seduces her on the way to hell and back? Heaven knows—all’s fair in love and war…

As the gods rage, the rest of the world falls. Unwilling drafted into the war between the old and new gods, Dr. Petra Robichaud works in a MASH unit, patching up wounded immortal soldiers and sending them on their way. Her latest patient is different than the rest as he sparks something in her long cold heart as she scrambles to save him, and accidentally reveals her ability to see ghosts, an instant death sentence. To protect herself, she tries to stay as far away from him as possible, but that proves difficult once he decides she is the one in the ancient prophecy who is supposed to stop the war. Galen would move heaven and earth for peace, and his method of persuasion is seduction, the one tactic Petra seems helpless to ignore.

I absolutely loved the setting for this book. It reminded me of the MASH tv shows that I watched growing up, only with a supernatural twist. Not only was the setting in a war triage unit, but there also was a great deal of humor just like the old episodes, making it a very enjoyable read. The paranormal elements only stepped my enjoyment up an even higher notch. There was a plethora of supernatural characters blended in with Greek Mythology, making for a very rich world. I particularly loved the dynamic between Petra's bunk mates, the werewolf and the vampire as their interactions were hilarious to say the least. Add that in with the constant prank attempts and the very nosy nature of the entire MASH staff and the crazy, but fun hilarity of it all kept me very entertained.

Petra and Galen made for an interesting couple to say the least. There were so many obstacles in their path, and yet something about them seemed to just perfectly fit from the very start, even though it took a while for any real "magic" to happen. Granted all the resistance came from Petra's end, but she had a very good reason for trying to hide herself from him and his demands. Not only could opening up to him mean an instant death for her if her secret abilities were to be revealed, but also his insistence that she is the prophecy absolutely terrifies her. Even so, Galen was relentless in his pursuit making him seem almost caveman in his pursuit, yet he somehow made it so charming at the same time. Petra's sass and frustration became rather hilarious at times as she tried to avoid Galen left and right. In fact, because of this I almost enjoyed the build up more than the actual relationship, and considering my strong love for all things romance, that is really saying something.

The overall feel of this Immortally Yours was really interesting, and quite entertaining. Both plot and situation the characters were placed in, were rather dark, and yet the entire book felt rather lighthearted due to the large amount of laugh out loud moments. This blend of dark and light made for the perfect afternoon read. With all the darker paranormal romances/urban fantasies that I read it is always nice to come across a lighter title for a change of pace. With laugh out loud humor, stellar characters, and an awesome mythology to boot, Immortally Yours is not to be missed!

Kirsten Reviews: Live and Let Drood by Simon R. Green

Live and Let Drood by Simon R. Green
Secret Histories #6

The name is Bond, Shaman Bond. Better known as Drood, Eddie Drood Yes, I’m one of those Droods—the family who’ve been keeping the forces of evil contained in the shadows for as long as humans have walked the earth. Recently, I suffered a slight case of death, but thanks to Molly, my best girl (who happens to be a powerful witch), I got over that right quick. Unfortunately, my family wasn’t so lucky. In my absence, Drood Hall was destroyed and all my relatives were killed. Which left me as the Last of the Droods. I didn’t much like being The Last Drood, I can tell you—and then I realized that things weren’t as they seemed. Someone had activated a dimensional engine, sending my Drood Hall off to an alternate Earth, replacing it with a burnt-out doppelganger. My family is still alive out there. Somewhere. And nothing’s going to stop me from finding them…

'Live and Let Drood,' the sixth book in Simon R. Green's 'Secret Histories series picks up where its protagonist, Eddie Drood, self styled magic-using James Bond-type left off. Fully recovered from death, apparently only a mild case, Eddie returns home to find it gone. More than that, Drood Manor has been attacked, and every single member of his family is missing.

Eddie and Molly Metcalf, his snarky, effervescent and pragmatic lover have a lot of enemies, and there's no telling which one of them might have been responsible for such a crime, but Eddie's out for blood.

Green has already established that Eddie Drood is a bit of a secret agent, but one that uses magic, and this latest installment continues utilizing this device to its fullest extent. Between travelling to new secret bases and dealing with a guy who's basically this series' version of 'Q,' Green is clearly enjoying himself. Even the quips and banter between Eddie, Molly, and the various other characters have the Ian Fleming flavor, and at times one is waiting for Sean Connery to step out onto the page in a recognizable cameo. Who knows, it could happen.

Eddie and Molly are so good at what they do that it's hard to buy them being in real danger, which means there are some bigger than life bad guys waiting around the corner for them. That is, if Eddie and his fiery companion don't knock them over the head first.

However, just as in any franchise, it's sometimes easy to see plot twists before the characters do, and this book has several that were obvious enough that I was waiting for Eddie to catch on for several chapters.

Aside from that quibble, Eddie Drood and the other characters are engaging enough that the reader is quite ready to head off with them to get a little revenge and cause as much trouble as possible along the way.

Early Review: Haunted by Jeanne C. Stein

Haunted by Jeanne C. Stein
Anna Strong Chronicles #8

Anna Strong—kick-ass bounty hunter and vampire—has made some enemies in her time. But it’s not just her old foes she should be worried about…

Anna’s shape-shifting friend Culebra finally opens up to her about his life before he owned Beso de la Muerte, a bar catering to supernatural clientele. As if summoned by the conversation, Culebra’s past stumbles into his bar in the form of an old buddy cashing in a favor.

Soon Anna, Culebra and her ex, DEA agent Max, find themselves deep in Mexico, dealing with drug cartel infighting, old vendettas and missing girls. Mexico just may prove to be Anna’s best match yet…

Since Anna was unwillingly turned into a vampire, there are very few people who know her true nature. Her shape-shifter friend, Culebra is one one of the few trusted ones, so when his dark past is revealed, that shock hits her even harder. Yet when one of his past cohorts comes to call wanting to cash in a life debt Anna instantly steps up, along with Max, the DEA agent and her ex, to support Culebra on his quest. Traveling deep into Mexico, Anna could have never imagined the horrors she would experience, ones that spurn her vampiric need for justice to a righteous fury. Like they say about a woman scorned, adding a vampire to the mix, and her opponents don't stand a chance.

I was utterly shocked at learning Culebra's past misdeeds. Considering how open he is now to everyone in need, by running the bar and the safe house nature it supplies, I just cannot believe he was ever so terrible. Just like Anna, it blew the wind out of my sails a good bit. Of course that shock didn't last very long for either of us as Anna realized that Culebra may very well be in trouble from that dark past. I think it shows a true testament to their strength in their friendship that stubborn Anna was able to get over such a shocker to her morals so fast. It also shows her fierce loyalty to those she calls her own, and I feel that despite his lesser moral past, Culebra is more than worthy of her support now.

Anna's love life is an utter tangled mess in Haunted. She's currently dating a human who accepts all of her, and doesn't shy away from her nature. Even though she is fond of him and he does make her happy, part of her isn't satisfied. Then there is the brief return of Frey and his son, which opens up all sorts of questions for Anna. In fact it shows her the life that she wants, a real family, but thought she could never have since she was turned into a vampire. Speaking of that turning, Anna is also mixed up in a mission with Max, the human who dumped her after finding out her true nature. Despite his terrible demeanor towards him and his nonacceptance, She'll always has a soft spot for him and there is a wistfulness there as she wishes he had been able to understand. So, needless to say, when it came to love, Anna was rather confused in Haunted. I have to admit that I have my preferences out of who I would pick from the three men, and I'm so happy that it looks like by the end, Anna will be heading in that direction. (I was purposely vague on that last statement to keep from spoiling the ending.)

I have to admit that most of the time I don't read the acknowledgements in books, but skip right to the "good stuff." However, this time around I'm very glad that I didn't follow that normal pattern, as Jeanne talked about writing this story because of the real issues below our borders and she wanted to give some sort of resolution, even if it was only a fictitious one. I've just always enjoyed stories that employ a deeper story or connection to the writer, as the emotion always seems to come across all the more strongly for it. All in all, I really enjoyed this latest installment in the Anna Strong series. It really amazes me just how much all of the characters have grown over the series, and I know I will be terribly sad to say goodbye to them in the next installment as it will be the last. Fans of the series won't be disappointed in Haunted as it is an action packed ride featuring an issue that is near and dear to the author's heart, making for an incredible read.

Early Review: The Asylum Interviews: Trixie by Jocelynn Drake

The Asylum Interviews: Trixie by Jocelynn Drake
The Asylum Tales #0.6

The second of two prequel stories to Jocelynn Drake's Angel's Ink.

Gage's ex-girlfriend is back in town and needs help escaping a master vampire. While not the easiest of tasks, he certainly didn't count of getting help from a mysterious woman with a few secrets of her own.

This novella served as an introduction into Gage's second new employee, Trixie. She seems very interesting as there is a whole lot of mystery surrounding her circumstances. Granted that means that we don't know a whole lot about her, but from what I can see she is very loyal, and has a pretty level head about her. I am intrigued about the attraction Gage seems to feel towards her, and I wonder if that will be going anywhere. I'm a big fan of romance, so of course I'm rooting for it, but only time will tell I suppose. On a slightly side note, I didn't really care for Jo at all, so I was incredibly glad that it was Trixie that would be working for Gage rather than Jo.

So in the end, just like the first prequel novella, Trixie's introduction only made me even more eager to dive into the first full installment in Jocelynn's new series. I seriously cannot wait, and I highly recommend these prequel novellas to help whet your appetite!

For the past three years, Eva has clung to the remnants of her life. Only Addie knows she’s still there, trapped inside their body. Then one day, they discover there may be a way for Eva to move again. Early Review: Shift by Kim Curran

, by KT

Shift by Kim Curran

When your average, 16-year old loser, Scott Tyler, meets the beautiful and mysterious Aubrey Jones, he learns he's not so average after all. He's a 'Shifter'. And that means he has the power to undo any decision he's ever made. At first, he thinks the power to shift is pretty cool. But as his world starts to unravel around him he realises that each time he uses his power, it has consequences; terrible unforeseen consequences. Shifting is going to get him killed. In a world where everything can change with a thought, Scott has to decide where he stands.

Everything about Scott Tyler screams average, until the day he met Audrey Jones and everything changed. Turns up he has the ability to go back and fix any mistake he ever made. Those with this power are called Shifters, but shifting comes with consequences, and every changed choice can cause unforeseen ripples. Suddenly his old boring life is looking more and more attractive as he finds himself a target for those who would see to use and control him for their own horrible gains.

The concept of Shift was really intriguing, but unfortunately the actual execution left a whole lot to be desired. I just felt like a whole lot more could have been done with the shifting as it was never fully explained. Granted there was a brief explanation on quantum physics, but all that really did was make my eyes cross. There just wasn't enough explanation to be satisfactory and combine that with the overall progress only just meandered along for most of the book, and I was more than frustrated.  Considering how insanely fast the pace was for the last third or so, I wish some of that had of been spread out a little to even the pace. Also, I had a large problem with the villain, as it seemed like he was only in there to add an element of horror and disgust. Considering the overall nefarious plot there was more than enough conflict that his inclusion was completely unnecessary, and really turned me off.

I could have overlooked the unrealized potential in the Shifting concept, and my pacing issues if the characters had of been more approachable. I honestly couldn't bring myself to care about them at all until more than halfway through, and even then it was only a faint fondness, the kind you may have for a distant cousin. Perhaps a lot of that had to with the fact that Scott himself didn't really care about much. He was just too sullen and honestly whiny for my tastes. So everything and everything else was tainted by his outlook since it was told by his perspective. It just made it really hard for me to care about what was happening to the characters, and when you don't care the enjoyment factor of a book is extremely lessened.

In all honesty, I'm surprised I finished Shift as I was never able to get attached to it. I just kept waiting for the moment where I would start to feel, well anything for the characters, but it never came. That being said, I do think Kim Curran is talented as the overall concept and writing style were impressive, enough so that I would be interested in checking out her future works as her imagination definitely isn't lacking. Perhaps this book will be more enjoyable to those who can form an emotional attachment to the narrator, but sullen teenage boys are a pass for me.

Spark by Brigid Kemmerer (Early Review)

The Treachery of Beautiful things had an interesting premise, but in the end it just didn't work for me. I just wasn't a fan of the writing style. The vast majority of reviews for this book have been glowing, so it may be worth checking out if you were interested in the first place.

I loved loved loved How to Lose a Demon in 10 Days. It is so stinking funny! Definitely a must buy!

Another awesome book, Spark blew my socks off. Seriously, Brigid writes a mean book!

Early Review: Spark by Brigid Kemmerer

, by KT

Spark by Brigid Kemmerer
Elementals #2

Gabriel Merrick plays with fire. Literally.

Sometimes he can even control it. And sometimes he can’t. Like the fire that killed his parents.

Gabriel has always had his brothers to rely on, especially his twin, Nick. But when an arsonist starts wreaking havoc on their town, all the signs point to Gabriel. Only he’s not doing it.

More than Gabriel’s pride is at stake -- this could cost him his family, maybe his life. And no one seems to hear him. Except a shy sophomore named Layne, a brainiac who dresses in turtlenecks and jeans and keeps him totally off balance. Layne understands family problems, and she understands secrets. She has a few of her own.

Gabriel can’t let her guess about his brothers, about his abilities, about the danger that’s right at his heels. But there are some risks he can’t help taking.

The fuse is lit…

Gabriel Merrick and his brothers have an affinity for the elements, and can do amazing things with them. Gabriel's gift lies with fire. Although sometimes it seems more like a curse as fire is very volatile and difficult to control, and that loss of control comes with serious consequences as he well knows due to the loss of his parents in one of his fires. Despite his immense guilt, Gabriel can't stay away from the fire no matter how hard he tries. This proves even more dangerous than normal when an arsonist starts setting deadly fires and Gabriel becomes the prime suspect. Even his own family thinks he's to blame, leaving him very isolated and alone. The only one who seems to believe him is a girl in his math class named Layne who he feels inexplicably drawn to, but she has her own secrets to keep. Gabriel will have to find a way to fight the fire raging inside him before he loses everything and everyone he has ever cared about.

I'll be the first to admit that I wasn't Gabriel's biggest fan in the previous installment. He just seemed to be too quick to anger for my tastes. In all honesty, I felt he was a jerk. However, in Spark, I saw him in a whole new light. Sure, he still is quite the accomplished jerk, and rather nasty to people in general, however, now that I understand him a little better I realize it is all a front to hide his massive insecurities. His element is fire, making him very volatile and really a powder keg ready to explode at any given moment. However, he despises himself for the lack of control he has, further frustrating himself and only adding fuel to the fire. He honestly cannot be described as anything other than severely damaged. Every day is such a struggle for him with his guilt and his desire to change and learn the control that seems forever out of his grasp. To make matters worse, everyone around him seems to think the worst of him, but in their defense, he doesn't exactly make it easy for them to believe in him. However, the further the book went on, the more the tide seemed to change as inch by inch Gabriel started to gain ground, and I was only cheering him on the entire way.

Layne is very damaged in her own way, but unlike Gabriel who puts out a very rough exterior, she hides deep within herself, trying to stay unnoticed at all costs. Yet, despite that she has an amazing inner strength of will that rivals Gabriel's even if she doesn't outwardly show it. It really amazed me just how similar they were deep down when you looked past the surface. Appearances definitely can be deceiving, and that definitely holds true here. I think it is that similarity in both strength and damage that really drew them to me as romantic interests. I just felt like they were on rather equal footing, an almost rarity in YA novels, making the romance very sweet and enjoyable. By having both of them damaged, but still incredibly strong, they were able to use their inner strengths to start to heal the other. I really do not think a more perfect match could have been made.

As much as I loved Storm, I have to admit that I was a little hesitant to read Spark. I'm a very loyal person character-wise, and I pretty much drag my feet whenever there is a change in character focus as I get so attached to the original ones that I don't want to let go. However after reading Spark, and getting to know Gabriel and Layne, that natural hesitance I have may very well have to change. In all honesty, I can't believe I'm saying this, but I actually may care for them even more than I did for Chris and Becca. So much so, that I wish there would be more focus on them in the future books. But then again, if the series trend is any indication, I'll probably wind up having a new favorite couple by the time I finish the next book. That being said, with this latest installment,  Brigid Kemmerer has fully cemented herself as a heavy hitter in the Paranormal YA genre. Trust me, she will definitely be one to watch out for and I cannot wait to see what is in store next. I highly recommend Spark to anyone who loved Storm as it will definitely rock your socks off. And if you haven't check this fabulous series out yet, well what are you waiting for, trust me you won't regret it. An absolute must buy!

That is a really tough question. I have several favorites that it is hard to narrow down. I'll list some of them with links here and then feature one at the bottom.

Featured Review:
Article 5 by Kristen Simmons
Article 5 #1
New York, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C., have been abandoned.

The Bill of Rights has been revoked, and replaced with the Moral Statutes.

There are no more police—instead, there are soldiers. There are no more fines for bad behavior—instead, there are arrests, trials, and maybe worse. People who get arrested usually don't come back.

Seventeen-year-old Ember Miller is old enough to remember that things weren’t always this way. Living with her rebellious single mother, it’s hard for her to forget that people weren’t always arrested for reading the wrong books or staying out after dark. It’s hard to forget that life in the United States used to be different.

Ember has perfected the art of keeping a low profile. She knows how to get the things she needs, like food stamps and hand-me-down clothes, and how to pass the random home inspections by the military. Her life is as close to peaceful as circumstances allow.

That is, until her mother is arrested for noncompliance with Article 5 of the Moral Statutes. And one of the arresting officers is none other than Chase Jennings…the only boy Ember has ever loved.

All of the major cities have crumbled, and basic rights are a thing of the past. Now control is based on a set of moral statutes, with harsh penalties for offenders. Being simply accused means a swift arrest and trial, and no one comes back from that. They are simply forgotten. Ember gets by as best she can while trying to contain her very free spirited mother. She's learned all the ways to blend in and stay unnoticed, keeping her life relatively normal, all things considered. However all that changes the day her mother is arrested for violating Article 5 in the Moral Statues by none other than her childhood love. With her life turned upside down, she finds herself in her own personal nightmare. The only question is whether she can survive it.

Ember (love that name!) is a flawed, but REAL character. Throughout Article 5 there were many times where I really wanted to strangle her for the poor decisions she was making, especially when it came to Chase. However, those mistakes only made her seem that much more real. We would all like to think that in a crisis situation we could keep our cool and know exactly what to do. Perhaps some of us could, but I have a feeling the majority of people would behave exactly like Ember. Her whole life has been turned upside down and people are trying to kill her left and right, she just isn't going to be able to accept all of that rationally, especially considering just how naive she was in the beginning. Nor would she be able to easily throw her trust into someone she felt abandoned by. She's entitled to have melt downs, and to be honest, she had a whole lot of character growth throughout Article 5, to the point where she is almost a completely different person.

The world behind Article 5 is so chilling and rather horrific. I love dystopian books; there is just something about them that calls to me. However, what sets Article 5 apart is how very real it felt. It very easily could have been happening now in our world, or at least in the very near future. All it would take would be for one single conflict to go bad, and land a terrible war on U.S. soil, with religious extremists rising to take over in the aftermath. The whole concept of morality being the controlling factor of society absolutely terrifies me. Forget the Bill of Rights, keep your head down and don't dare to make a single misstep or you will pay dearly. My heart bled for these characters, in their desperation to survive, especially Ember as her eyes were painfully opened to the horrors of her world.

This is one of those books where you are so far sucked into the story you don't even notice the flaws until it is time to write the review. When I first finished the book I eagerly stamped a five star rating on it via goodreads, but now as I look back I realize that much of the story wasn't perfect. The idea of persecuting people for "crimes" they committed many years before there was even a law against them doesn't seem really plausible. Especially since this would impact as much as a third of the population. Also there was the issue of the too short time in the camp leaving that feeling a little undeveloped, as well as a few other things. Does that mean I'm going to now lower my rating? Absolutely not, as the reading experience was so intense, it more than warrants the five. No book is ever going to be perfect, and in the end what matters most is being entertained and emotionally attached to the story, and Article 5 certainly fits that bill. So if you like a book that is so riveting and compelling, as well as impossible to put down, then Article 5 is one debut you won't want to miss!
