Angelfire by Courtney Allison Moulton
Angelfire #1

When seventeen-year-old Ellie starts seeing reapers - monstrous creatures who devour humans and send their souls to Hell - she finds herself on the front lines of a supernatural war between archangels and the Fallen and faced with the possible destruction of her soul.

A mysterious boy named Will reveals she is the reincarnation of an ancient warrior, the only one capable of wielding swords of angelfire to fight the reapers, and he is an immortal sworn to protect her in battle. Now that Ellie's powers have been awakened, a powerful reaper called Bastian has come forward to challenge her. He has employed a fierce assassin to eliminate her - an assassin who has already killed her once.

While balancing her dwindling social life and reaper-hunting duties, she and Will discover Bastian is searching for a dormant creature believed to be a true soul reaper. Bastian plans to use this weapon to ignite the End of Days and to destroy Ellie's soul, ending her rebirth cycle forever. Now, she must face an army of Bastian's most frightening reapers, prevent the soul reaper from consuming her soul, and uncover the secrets of her past lives - including truths that may be too frightening to remember.

Ellie just turned seventeen, but for her birthday she didn't get the normal presents you would expect. Her gifts involve being able to see the reapers, creatures who steal souls and send them straight to Hell. She also finds out that she is meant to be the main force against these creatures in a hopes to finally win the war between Angels and the Fallen. She meets Will, the mysterious warrior, who has pledged his allegiance to her and her alone. It turns up she's met and lost him countless times in her many lives and battles over evil. However, this life may be different as a particularly nasty reaper is trying to raise a weapon that could destroy her soul forever. She'll have to balance her new life and old as well as growing feelings for her protector if she is to have any hope at surviving this mess, as this truly may be her last life.

I had a hard time getting into this book fully as it felt like too much was kept secret. Will seemed to keep Ellie in the dark as much as he could. This didn't make a lot of sense to me since she should have remembered it anyway. So why wouldn't he just tell her. I do like a little mystery in my books, but I just felt left behind at times as I wasn't really sure what was going on, or why there was a need for such secrecy. It did get better as the book went on and more was revealed, I just wish things would have become more clear sooner so I could have concentrated more on what was actually happening at the time rather than worrying about the past.

Typically I'm a fan of the forbidden love theme, however this one frustrated me more than anything. I just didn't feel the reasoning for why they couldn't be together to be strong enough to make me really feel like it was worth them trying to deny how they felt. Well, that isn't exactly correct, they didn't deny it, just refused to do anything about this love. Considering the two are bonded for life as he is her only guardian, I'm not really sure how long they will be able to hold out. I guess only time will tell. Personally I hope they give into the temptation, as there was some major chemistry between the two, and be darned the consequences. I mean come on, Ellie is a kick butt heroine that steps right up to the plate, and Will is definitely swoon worthy himself. Who wouldn't want a guy that is completely devoted to you no matter what you need?

Despite the issues I had with some of the aspects of the book, it is a very well written, enjoyable read. It definitely was action packed, and read very fast. I have a feeling the next installment will be even better as Ellie learns more about her past, and we get to see what she decides to do with her new knowledge. I found the twist in her heritage to be just the thing this book needed to spurn extra interest and make me very eager to read the next book. All in all I recommend this for Paranormal YA fans, as it is a installment on the darker side of the genre that you won't want to miss.

  1. I enjoyed this book more than I expected I would. It wasn't without its flaws, but it was still a decent read.

And wow, the Google word verification thing actually spelled out a real word today. "Realize." I wonder if the universe is trying to tell me something!
