If only it was that simple. Katharine is unable to tolerate the weakest poison, and Arsinoe, no matter how hard she tries, can’t make even a weed grow. The two queens have been shamefully faking their powers, taking care to keep each other, the island, and their powerful sister Mirabella none the wiser. But with alliances being formed, betrayals taking shape, and ruthless revenge haunting the queens’ every move, one thing is certain: the last queen standing might not be the strongest…but she may be the darkest.

For such an interesting premise, THREE DARK CROWNS suffers from a lack of strong execution. From the blurb, I was thoroughly hooked, however upon reading, especially at first, I was less than enamored. The book starts off in the middle of things to the point where it's incredibly confusing as to what's going on. I had to go back twice to make sure my kindle didn't accidentally start at a few chapters in. But unfortunately that wasn't the case so I mustered on. I have to admit I almost DNF this book several times. Nothing really happens, nothing is explained, nothing made sense, and frankly not a single one of the characters aside from one side one really caught my attention until pretty far into the book. It's hard to root for someone to win when none of them seem worthy and/or remarkable enough to really get behind them.

With that ringing endorsement, you are probably wondering why I kept reading and didn't give up on the book, and why I wound up rating it a 3 rather than lower. Somehow despite my confusion and lack of attachment to the characters, after the first few chapters I found myself oddly hooked. I just couldn't stop reading. The premise and the world is incredibly fascinating, and while the continually rotating perspectives made it hard to get attached to any one character it was rather addicting much to my surprise. There's just something so dark and twisted about the story, and I especially enjoyed how every path that seemed to light would twist and turn and wind up leading back down a dark path again. Those aspects of the story kept me on my toes and turning the pages. By the end the three sisters all seemed to have found their identities and chutzpah. It should make for one heck of a showdown once things come to a head if the last few chapters of this one are any indication.

Overall I'd say THREE DARK CROWNS is one heck of a "sleeper" hit that sneaks up on you. From starting out so rocky, it rather impressed me at the end. I have very high hopes for this dark and twisted series, and can honestly say I'm dying to get my hands on the next book.

THE SIGHT is a very impressive read that built a steady pace right from the start, finishing in one heck of a doozy ending. While the romance took up a good deal of the focus this time around, which I'll get into in a moment, the pacing of the actual plot was near perfect. Chloe's post-apocalptic New Orleans is so rich and full of detail, that I felt immersed in the character's struggle right alongside them. This time around centers around a truly nasty foe and a whole lot of paranoia and blind hatred, bringing the prejudices and fight between humans and paranormals to a head. That being said, the events were as far from predictable as you can imagine.

I have to admit the romance in THE SIGHT about gave me a terrible case of axiety as I was reading. It was incredibly stressful as both Liam and Claire acted and made decisions as if the two were a couple, and all the other characters treated them as such as well. And yet, there was still this huge barrier in actual romance. While I understood the things keeping them apart, it really didn't make it any easier. There's so much build up and tension of will they or won't that that I felt a nervous wreck the entire book. And then even when I felt that the tides had finally started to turn I just knew the other shoe would be dropping soon. And boy did it drop. While it's killer on my nerves, I do have to applaud Chloe for pouring so much emotion into the pair to more than keep me on my toes.

Between the twists and turns of this book and the crazy up and down romance, after finishing THE SIGHT I have to admit I'm rather desperate to get my hands on the next book. I have to know what happens next now! If you enjoy Chloe's books, and particularly The Veil, you'll be more than pleased with this latest installment in the Devil's Isle series.

Night Shift, third book in Charlaine Harris' Midnight Texas series is an “everybody comes together” sort of story, more so than the other books as the different characters are truly coming into their abilities, or have mostly sorted out who they are.

There is something underneath Midnight’s crossroads. It’s alive, and is compelling people to come to Midnight and then committed suicide at the crossroads. With so many deaths comes attention, the sort of thing that is definitely unwelcome in Midnight, and everyone one of its residents are uneasy. As it happens, everyone in Midnight has secrets, and although only a few of them are human, this is a town that looks after one another.

Lemuel is hard at work translating an ancient text which may have the answers to prevent the coming disaster, but it’s slow work. There are a few new faces in town, something that it’s always viewed with curiosity and a bit of wariness by the residents, and the suicides continue happening.

Fiji too is key to what’s happening, as the thing at the crossroads is speaking to her, and it’s hungry for more death and discord.

The rest of the humans and other creatures living in Midnight are heavily involved in what’s going on, but it’s Fiji in particular whose journey as a witch and a woman is essential to the plot.

Midnight may seem like a sleepy town on the surface, but the truth is that there’s much more beneath the surface, and some things are neither resting easy nor particularly friendly.

When it comes to urban fantasy/paranormal romance it simply doesn't get better than Nalini Singh. There's just something magical about her writing and the amazing worlds she creates. And the characters, they're incredibly well fleshed out and fully three-dimensional, from the smallest role to the largest. The Psy-Changling world in particular has one heck of a large cast of characters and not a single one fades to the background. It's incredibly impressive. What's even more impressive is how rich of a story she can tell in just short novella formats, which leads me to this book. WILD EMBRACE both impressed and enthralled me from the very first page. Simply put, if you're a fan of the series you cannot miss this book. It checks in with characters both new and old, ones that have been mentioned but no really focus previously now shine.

Echo of Silence brings us to the illusive but fascinating Stefan that had been mentioned in several books previously. I was really happy to see the story behind his reclusive-ness, and loved every minute of it. It's incredibly sweet and the following tradition/forging new paths aspect were particularly enjoyable. A very heart-warming novella.

I absolutely loved Dorian's story. While it's the shortest novella, it covers the most amount of time, packing in an incredible amount of emotion in such a small package. With him being a non-shifter for so long yet still having his shifter side trapped inside, there was a whole heck of a lot going on with him. While he may have had a full book previously, I felt this novella really brought out his character and I'm so glad I was able to read it.

Partners in Persuasion was simply a lot of fun. It involves a dominant female chasing after a submissive male. There's a whole lot of a cat and mouse going on and nothing goes smoothly at all. I really enjoyed watching this duo learn to make their very, very different natures to find romance.

Finally Flirtation in Fate is a pair of reunited lovers that included all that yummy tension you'd expect in this kind of story. Garnet wants nothing to do with Kenji and he's dead set on changing her mind. Definitely a lot of fun to watch that "dance."

Trust me, if you enjoy the Psy-Changling world, you're in for a treat. Run, do not walk to your nearest bookstore and snatch this one up.

Heroine Complex by Sarah Kuhn is a blend of urban fantasy and comedy that is both charming and earnestly nerdy. The protagonist, Evie Tanaka is the much-put-upon personal assistant to super heroine Aveda Jupiter, protector of San francisco, where a demonic portal opened eight years ago. One result of this is that some people gained powers, allowing them to fight back against the demons.

Aveda makes her living, and maintains her fan base by protecting San Francisco from the demons that occasionally come through other portals. This means she has to be perfect, on social media, in all her media appearances, and of course, be in top notch physical condition. Evie and Aveda’s other staff, Lucy, her martial arts instructor and bodyguard, Nate, doctor and wanna be mad scientists who lives in the basement.

Meanwhile, Evie keeps Aveda’s life on track, from recording her battles against demons, to organizing her finances, doing her hair and makeup, as well as keeping Aveda’s image spotless - if not always zit-free. As if that isn’t enough, Evie is also trying to raising her teenage sister, Bea, and so doesn’t have much in the way of a personal life of her own.

However, this changes when Evie has to pose as Aveda for one night, and it’s revealed that she also has powers. Now it’s up to her to thwart a demonic invasion, deal with reporters, the slings and arrows of social media, cupcakes with teeth, and a rebellious teenage sister.

Anyone who appreciates comic books, a good dose of humor, and stories about protagonists learning to step out of obscurity to be heroines and heroes will enjoy this book, and hope that these are just the start of Evie’s battles with the forces of evil, with and without frosting.

One of the best things about any of Yasmine's books is how rich and real the main protagonists are, and Shimmer is no exception. Sometimes it's hard to remember/believe that Shimmer is actually hundreds of years old. She's so very naive and not very worldly and then she does something or makes a choice that seems wise beyond her years and suddenly I remember that she's not actually young. Just more than a little inexperienced when it comes to social interactions and the human realm. I really enjoy this juxtaposition in her character as it makes for an interesting blend. Seeing the world new through her eyes is fascinating and I love getting to see her learn and grow. I also admire her for realizing just how inexperienced she is, especially in the romance department and has been taking things slow. That's not to say she's not going head-first into life and romance, but she's still keeping her wits about her and I admire it.

The other thing I really enjoy about Yasmine's books is how fast paced and complex the plotlines are and again this is where FLIGHT FROM MAYHEM shines. There was so much going on in this book it built to an almost frenetic pace at times and yet it still all felt natural. Intense at times, but it all still flowed well and never became too much. In fact, once I started reading I had a heck of a time putting the book down, a sure sign of a great read. Between the Salamander demon, the ghost next door, a stalker, a psycho ex, and so much more going on I had to keep turning the pages to see what would happen next.

All in all, FLIGHT FROM MAYHEM is one heck of an entertaining read that is sure to please fans of the series.

I'm such a sucker for Egyptian lore stories, so this series is seriously my jam. While RECREATED didn't sweep me away quite as much as Reawakened did, it was a very enjoyable read. There's just something magical about the style of writing and it's so easy to get sucked right into the story. The characters are phenomenal and all incredibly three-dimensional. The world behind the story was expanded even further than in the first book, and each new element be they the location, mythology, or a character were fully fleshed out as well. It truly is impressive just how well Colleen incorporates each and every element to make them all seem so realistic and full of depth.

Despite all the new elements, characters, and depth to the world, so much of the book is spent with Lily fully at the helm/focus. While Lily is a great character, I have to admit I missed the brothers a great deal, and even when they came back into focus, they really only served to confuse things. In the first book, the romance is all sweeping and consuming and I loved every bit of it. But this time around due to circumstances I won't reveal to keep from spoiling, that romance gets questioned due to other influences. To make matters worse there's hints of a love triangle that left me scratching my head. Granted there's possibly a logical reason behind it, but I still felt it lessened the epic love between Lily and Amun that sucked me in so much in the first book.

Love triangle/romance issues aside, I thoroughly enjoyed RECREATED and am dying to get my hands on the next book in the series. Hopefully this is longer than a trilogy as only three books in this amazing world will never be enough!

Delivering a rare book to a valued customer is definitely part of mild-mannered archivist Anna Winthrop's job description. You know what isn't? Fortunately, Anna's dashing fanged companion Finn Palmeroy helps her fend off the attack, but not before their plane crash lands in the forest hundreds of miles from civilization. Great, now she's stranded with a priceless tome and a rakish vampire whose bedtime is fast approaching. Why does everyone want this book so badly, anyway? Anna just wants to get it to Jane before Finn decides to turn her into dinner-or sweep her off her feet. Okay, the second option is really tempting. But they're not out of the woods yet...

Ah, yet another fantastic Molly Harper read. Her books are on my auto-buy shelf, I don’t even bother to read the blurb prior to adding to my shelf. I simply know each one will bring a solid block of hilarious entertainment, and WHERE THE WILD THINGS BITE is no exception. This time around the hilarious hi-jinks take off with a bang, literally, as it centers on a plane crash. When I read Molly’s dedication/acknowledgement page saying that she wrote this story about a plane crash while traveling on several flights of all things, I laughed out loud and knew I was in for a good book. You’ve gotta have a sense of humor to write about impending doom a f light while on one. And ironically, I’m writing this review while flying on a plane just to add a little more cosmic humor to the mix.

True to form, Anna was more than a bit of a quirky character. I found her anxiety and ways of coping by researching and memorizing a insane amount of facts and statistics on everything she was afraid of. And considering how much she is afraid of, it’s a staggering amount of knowledge. And of course, that knowledge, anxiety and fact repetition annoy the hero in the most hilarious way. So it was a double win as she endeared me to her and also amused me at her antics that drove Finn so very batty. Combine a grumpy vampire and a neurotic fact driven ball of anxiety human, put them through a plane crash and you’d already have an interesting story. But then have them try and survive in the middle of an enormous wilderness without killing one another with secrets on both sides abound, and you’re in for a hilarious treat of a read.

Without spoiling anything I’ll stop here. If you’re a fan of Molly’s books you’ll love this deliciously fun and hilarious romp in the wilderness in true Half-Moon Hollow style. And if you haven’t yet tried anything from this hilarious author, well what are you waiting for? If you love a whole lot of humor mixed in with serious vampire and shifter hijinks in a backwoods town, then these are the perfect books for you.

There are new stories and some that were previously published, and gathered together they fill in many of the blanks and “behind the scenes” moments in the lives of various characters. As a whole the series covered a lot of ground, but this collection definitely proves that there are still adventures to be with these characters, and readers will likely want even more stories after finishing it.

A few of the stories are summarized below.

Grudge

Concerns Shane’s sister Alyssa, and is the story of how she died from Shane’s point of view, expanding on what readers already know and the reasons for both his guilt and anger.

Wrong Place, Wrong Time

This short story is told from the point of view of Richard Morrell. Monica is involved in an attempted robbery, and justice falls on the perpetrators swiftly and without mercy.

Nothing Like an Angel

The history between Myrnin and Lady Grey is explore, beginning from her rescuing him from a dungeon prison and then nursing him back to health. It’s a nice look at their relationship and how it’s lasted this long.

Again, this collection is a good way to revisit the series, or for someone who wants a bit more background on the characters, but it doesn’t stand as well alone without having previously read some, if not all of the Morganville Vampires books.

I'm a huge fan of the dystopian genre, so I really appreciate when a series comes along that is as unique and interesting as this one. Rachel Caine brought a truly horrify prospect to life, between the burners who destroy books, to the Library's iron fist control, and the limited content in books. Every single moment I found myself both riveted and horrified at what was happening. It really is enjoyable for a book's world to grip you as much as this one does. There's no sophomore syndrome to be found here!

Jess has really come an incredibly long way from the impetuous boy we met in the first book. It's rather impressive to be honest. Of course he still bucks against authority and goes his own way more often than not, but he takes the time to try and think through the consequences for others. He's truly admirable in his willingness to sacrifice himself for others and he's really grown/growing into a force to be reckoned with. When you add his admirable qualities to the rest of the fully three dimensional characters, particularly Glain, Khalia, Wolfe, and well frankly his entire crew to be honest, you really have a winner.

I've yet to read a Rachel Caine series that has let me down, in fact far from it, and The Great Library series is no exception. My only wish is that there winds up being more than three books as a trilogy just isn't enough. Fans of the series will be more than pleased with this new installment. I can't wait to see what happens next!
