Magic Rises by Ilona Andrews
Kate Daniels #6

Atlanta is a city plagued by magical problems. Kate Daniels will fight to solve them—no matter the cost.

Mercenary Kate Daniels and her mate, Curran, the Beast Lord, are struggling to solve a heartbreaking crisis. Unable to control their beasts, many of the Pack’s shapeshifting children fail to survive to adulthood. While there is a medicine that can help, the secret to its making is closely guarded by the European packs, and there’s little available in Atlanta.

Kate can’t bear to watch innocents suffer, but the solution she and Curran have found threatens to be even more painful. The European shapeshifters who once outmaneuvered the Beast Lord have asked him to arbitrate a dispute—and they’ll pay him in medicine. With the young people’s survival and the Pack’s future at stake, Kate and Curran know they must accept the offer—but they have little doubt that they’re heading straight into a trap…

Losing children to the unpredictability of the beasts has always been an unfortunate and horrible fact of life for the Pack due to an extreme shortage of the medicine that helps prevent adolescents from going loup. When two of the pack's youngsters go over the edge, it's the final straw, especially since there is an opportunity to acquire some of the coveted medicine from the European packs. Of course Kate and Curran know it's a trap, but with the children of their pack at stake they have no choice. So, they plan for every contingency, or at least they think they are. Once they arrive, it's quickly apparent the web being woven is even more tangled than they could have imagined, and this time around they may not be able to escape the mess they've found themselves in. It will take a lot more than Kate's fancy swordplay, and Curran's roaring to survive this one.

I'm usually pretty wary of plots that center around a trip where the characters know they are walking into a trap, but are forced to still go because of certain circumstances. Either the forced circumstances are not strong enough to warrant knowingly going into a trap, or they characters don't take said trap seriously enough leading me to feel somewhat detached from the story. However, I shouldn't have worried in this case as MAGIC RISES held none of those issues, and kept me riveted throughout the entire book. For the circumstances that forced them into the trap, what could be stronger than the need to acquire a medicine to help save the pack's children? This one really pulled at my heartstrings, which of course only pulled me further into the book.

MAGIC RISES is one of those books that will put you through an emotional wringer in the romance department. We are talking your hearts placed in a blender on the puree setting and then ground into paste for good measure. It literally was that much of an emotional blow. What's really amazing is that there was so much going on in this book, with the action and plot being absolutely riveting, yet by the end, the thing that made the most impression and really sticks with you is the turmoil between Kate and Curran. There were several times throughout the book where I almost didn't want to continue reading as the emotional turmoil was so high  and I just couldn't see past it. Suffice it to say that despite being a mated couple their relationship is anything but safe, and Ilona Andrews pulled no punches in this book. That's not to say that it is all doom and gloom, but it's definitely a ride full of turbulence to say the least.

You would think I would be used to Ilona Andrews thoroughly impressing me with each new installment, and yet still I find myself almost surprised each time around when the book blows me out of the water. I mean just how much better can their books get, when they are already so fabulous. I seriously could fan girl about this book and series all day, but I'll just stop myself here. Fans of the series will be more than pleased with this latest installment in the already fabulous Kate Daniels series. A fabulous read from start to finish, MAGIC RISES is not to be missed!

Author info:

Ilona Andrews is the pseudonym for a husband-and-wife writing team. Ilona is a native-born Russian and Gordon is a former communications sergeant in the U.S. Army. Contrary to popular belief, Gordon was never an intelligence officer with a license to kill, and Ilona was never the mysterious Russian spy who seduced him. They met in college, in English Composition 101, where Ilona got a better grade. (Gordon is still sore about that.)

Gordon and Ilona currently reside in Texas with their two children, and many dogs and cats. They have co-authored two series, the bestselling urban fantasy of Kate Daniels and romantic urban fantasy of The Edge.
